This is one of the castles in the Matilde di Canossa's land. She was a noblewoman which acted as intermediary between the pope and the german king/emperor Enry IV who had been excommunicated and had to go to Canossa, wait for three days in the cold january winter of 1077 before being able to meet the pope, guest in the Canossa castle, and be forgiven. I just visited this castle, which was built as a fortress to protect the territories and the main castle in Canossa, and the most famous Canossa, of which only some ruins remain. This one is in good conditions and it is now a hoster. It is possible to visit it with a guided tours on saturday afternoon and sunday but I am not sure that they also offer tours in English. Anyway, the view is fantastic and the story of the castle and its (military) architecture are interesting. Surely worth a visit. In the Canossa castle near by you can also visit a small museum about Matilde and the history of her castles
