This is great medieval church. The original church, its design, its proportions, its frescos, all are wonderful. Please try to imagine they had left it alone after about 1500. Like so many churches in Italy, it was built originally in the 12th century but constantly "improved". The improvements of the ear 1500 to 1900 are relatively garish and rococo compared with the original spare architecture and restrained frescoes. That is too bad, so try to imagine they are not there. That is not what the guides or guidebooks will tell you, but it is what your eyes and heart will tell you, if you are open to it. Italian church architecture lost its way after the early renaissance. Compare the beautiful austerity of the Duomo in Orvieto, for example, with the tarted up grandeur of the Duomo in Siena. The guidebooks rave about both. But if you are open to it, you will see the relative purity of the earlier thought and style.
