Amazing

Rob was waiting for us with a kestrel on his hand. From the interaction between the bird and Rob it was clear that he is totally dedicated to the welfare of the birds at the sanctuary. The birds he cares for can not be returned to the wild for a variety of reasons.

We were lucky to get the private tour at the last minute. It was spectacular. Each bird is housed in an appropriately sized and equipped enclosure. He regularly interacts with each bird as can be seen by the relaxed attitude of the birds.

In addition, the property the sanctuary is on is a beautiful natural area worth a visit just by itself.

Don't bother with the Open House day
Aug 2021
I didn't do my due diligence in finding out exactly what was involved in the open day. If you do it, know that you have to commit over 4 hours to it if you want to actually see all of the presentations and birds. Not that they'll tell you that when you arrive. You will be shuffled from location to location, you'll stand around getting bitten by mosquitoes listening to presentations full of forced enthusiasm and, if you know a bit about raptors already, you'll find some of it to be pretty tedious. But, for heaven's sake, don't try to look at any of the birds on your own, even though they're all in mews that are well away from where you can stand. Everything is quite rigidly structured.

Also, if you're thinking that because it's outdoors, it's safe during a pandemic, just know that some of these people have no concept of personal space or any awareness that some children don't like being touched by people they don't know.

Of course, the primary purpose of this place is to care for the birds, not to entertain people, and I'm sure they do that very well. It's an organization worth supporting, and apparently the private tour is a better experience, but I wouldn't recommend the Open House.

Our group opted for a private tour, and we HIGHLY recommend doing this! Rob is fantastic and his passion for these majestic creatures is evident. He has a wealth of knowledge and is happy to answer any and all questions! The grounds/aviaries are well maintained. If you are looking for something unique to do in Door County, we highly recommend you check these guys out!

Went on a tour with 5 friends. It was an amazing experience. The staff was very knowledgable and it was cool to see the native birds of prey up close! 5 out of 5. Would go again!

Private Tour

Awesome! This was the highlight of our trip! We absolutely loved it. Highly recommend the private tour as it is up close and personal with the birds. Rob is an excellent guide and he runs the sanctuary. He is so nice and very knowledgeable about the birds. They are well cared for and you can see how much he loves these animals. I really had a great time and it is very interesting! I want to go back to visit!

Must-do for bird lovers - private tour
Jun 2021
This was a wonderful private tour of a raptor sanctuary! We learned so much about these majestic birds and marveled at the interaction that Rob has with each of them, as well as his knowledge about them. While we didn't get to hold the birds, he took several of them out for us to meet up close and photograph. (Trust me, you probably don't want to hold them - they are pretty heavy plus they're, well, raptors.) The tour lasts about 2 hours, but can go longer depending how many questions you have about the birds. The property and the animals are very well taken care of, and it was a very reasonable donation to take the tour. They are open to the public on Saturdays but tours can be any other day of the week as long as you arrange them in advance by email. The place is only about 10 years old and it would be nice to see it last for many more!

Fun, Educational, & Hands-On!
Jun 2021
If you find yourself near the Door County area, you're likely looking to experience the natural beauty and bounty of the state and Open Door Bird Sanctuary is a wonderful stop along the way to learn more about Wisconsin's indigenous raptors and more! We booked a private tour with Ron and got to really experience the ins and outs of the sanctuary's workings plus we got to meet and greet all of the birds. It was awesome to see, realistically, what goes on behind the scenes and everything that goes into taking care of these magnificent avians. We also found ourselves especially enraptured with Radar the Barred Owl and Rockie the Paragon Falcon and we greatly appreciated how passionate Ron was about all of the animals and the work he does to make their lives the best they can be. For my fiance and I, the biggest highlight was getting the opportunity for each of us to hand feed Merlins - Arthur and Percy! It should be noted that birds eat all manner of things, many of which include other little creatures like mice, so if you are squeamish about the prospect of food preparation just be aware that this topic is fully explored during the tour. All in all, it was a fascinating, down-to-earth, and educational journey that we would highly recommend to anyone!

Something different to do
Oct 2020 • Family
We go to Door County at least once per year and this was a great addition to our most recent trip. We booked a private tour (very reasonable price) and Rob did a nice job showing us around and providing a great education to our family which included two teenagers a little skeptical of the activity :-) The birds are very well cared for and only there because they wouldn’t survive in the wild or would otherwise be euthanized. If you like birds, or even just think they’re kinda cool and would like to learn more, I highly recommend.

Just okay
Jul 2020
We stopped in during their Open House, and while it was nice to see the various birds, the presentation was a little tedious. We had a 5 year old with us, which was the reason we stopped in. She enjoyed seeing the birds, but the "talk" was way above a child's level. It was great for adults, but could have been much more engaging, and interesting. My husband is a biology teacher and also thought the presentation could have been better and involved the audience in a better manner. It was clear the presenter loves his subject, and loves the birds, though.

Mingle with the raptors!
Sep 2019
Open Door is a 34 acre sanctuary that provides homes for un-releasable birds of prey. Presently, it is home to about a dozen birds including Fisher, a bald eagle and Bill, a great horned owl. The birds are beautiful, and reflect the loving care of their professional care-taking team. We arranged a private tour - very affordable - and spent nearly 2.5 hours meeting the birds, learning about the critical roles birds of prey play in our midwestern ecosystem. It was a wonderful. If you love animals, you'll enjoy visiting this sanctuary and supporting the work the dedicated staff does 24/7.
