A tropical island in the heart of the Alps - A tropical paradise where you would least expect it: at the foot of some of Switzerland's most impressive mountains. The "Tropenhaus" in the town of Frutigen takes advantage of renewable energy from an unusual source to breed Siberian sturgeon for caviar, as well as grow bananas, papayas and kumquats. This one-of-a-kind centre offers visitors the opportunity to learn and experience - and even taste - how all this is possible in the Alps!

Geothermal power, renewable energy, aquaculture and sustainable food production can all be seen and experienced under one roof at the Tropenhaus. A tour of the centre includes a walk through the greenhouses with their flourishing tropical fruit trees and exotic plants, as well as a stop at the fishponds to watch impressive sturgeon of all sizes. The unique, renewable energy concept of the Tropenhaus takes advantage of the warm water that springs from the nearby Lotschberg rail tunnel. Additionally, solar panels, hydroelectricity, and biomass are used to heat and power the building. The special atmosphere and architecture also make the Tropenhaus an ideal setting for events of all kinds.

Alpine first - caviar and kumquats

The Tropenhaus in Frutigen is considered a pioneer in land-based aquaculture. The annual production of the rich sturgeon meat amounts to 18 tons. The centre has also ushered in a new era in the history of caviar production. A tour of the greenhouses reveals an astonishing array of fruit trees, exotic spices and plants.

Dining - tropical discoveries

The fruits grown on the premises, as well as the centre's sturgeon meat, are served up as fresh, authentic dishes in the Tropenhaus's very own restaurants - the

"Terrasserie" and "Oona - the restaurant". There is also a selection of other regional specialties on offer.

We were so impressed with the chef who after being told by the waitress that my nephew was both gluten and egg intolerant, came to our table and helped choose a suitable meal... We started with the caviar and gluten free bread was provided. The meal was excellent and high praise to both the waitress and the chef Martin Strechle... More

The Tropenhaus is a caviar farm and also has greenhouses full of tropical and exotic plants. It also has a museum about energy usage as the speciality of the fish farm is using the naturally warm water from underground to be sustainable. The museum is quite accessible because they have translations on all of their displays. There are also a... More

We booked a special valentines dinner in the Tropenhaus. The staff was very friendly and was able to answer most of our questions about the tropical plants and all of our inquiries about the 4 course menu. The tables were scattered all over the greenhouse. So every table had a bit of privacy. The food was delicious. Everybody had the... More

we were quite disappointed with the Tropenhaus. It seems the place is merely there to attract people to purchase caviar from the fish farm. I thought the Tropenhaus would be the main part of this attraction but really, i think the main part is the fish farm. Also, the entrance fee is quite expensive for what it is. the food... More

Dear WoroJ, Indeed, the name „Tropenhaus“ is sometimes a little misleading. While we have a wonderful tropical garden with exotic plants, spices and fruits, the fish farm is an important part of the Tropenhaus concept. It is where the naturally warm mountain water is mainly used. We are truly sorry for that we didn’t meet your expectations. Nonetheless, we wish... More

A unique experience to visit and dine in the middle of a rainforest in the middle of Switzerland. Walk amongst tropical fruit trees and visit the sturgeon tanks and see how they make AMAZING caviar, and then have a coffee or lunch on the terrace and have butterflies flirting around the plentiful orchids next your table. And all this when... More

Since it was the end of May and we were in the middle of a snow storm for a few days, we decided to cheer up with some nice tropical weather at the Tropenhaus. We visited Frutigen and didn't know about the Tropenhaus. While passing the Tropenhaus, we decided spontaneously to have a break and go in. The attraction is quite overpriced. You wouldn't be there for the whole day, so you shouldn't pay as you would do for a day-trip-attraction. If you visit, you should have a guided tour. We were lucky and... More
