Walking in Malta
Nov 2019
Europeans all seem to know Malta - it is very busy with tourists. It is not as well known in Australia. The walls to the main city of Valletta are extraordinary, probably the most impressive in Europe if not anywhere. It is an obvious place to base yourself in Malta. The main island is small, all parts accessible by public bus in under an hour. Valletta almost feels like London, plenty of streets to walk up and down, signs and menus in english and plenty of on-street dining options. Public buses are very organised and easy to negotiate. It is an easy day trip to bus around to Sliema and to walk around the shops and beaches, then to do the same to the opposite side of the harbour to walk around the three cities. Nearly all tourists catch the bus to Rabat to look around the ancient capital of Mdina. We enjoyed Rabat itself. We were able to sit in the city square and actually feel like we with locals - the coffee shop, beer and pasties being served there were lovely. St Paul's catacombs are near the town square and are a fairly cheap way to look underground.
