Hidden gem
Nov 2019 • Solo
Proof that there was elegant living in places other than Rome and Florence, this splendid castle in tiny San Giustino is a wonderful off-the-typical-tourist path destination. All tours are conducted by charming volunteer guides. Definitely worth a deviation into far eastern Tuscany/Umbria to see.

reopened after centuries of private ownership
Sep 2019
This castello has been owned by the Bufalini family for a log time and they used it as their residence. Now that it is state owned it has been renovated and opened for the public to visit. The tours are done by volunteers, so it is unpredictable if they can speak any languages other than Italian. We joined the tour and then abandoned it, as it was all in Italian and clearly aimed at the Italian audience. We checked out the garden (beautiful) and the interior (impressive). About half the rooms in the castle are open for visitors. They are filled with furniture and paintings, some very beautiful. Altogether a nice trip and an impressive castle.

Gem of a palace

Seems to be newly reopened as not much publicised. We were shown round by an elderly volunteer who was very keen and knowledgable and although he kept apologising, he had perfectly adequate English. There are translated info boards in all the rooms. Some fantastic ceiling paintings and lovely views from the loggia. Was a fantastic hidden gem of a place. Well worth a visit- visit was 1.5 hours in total.

The English speaking guide was unavailable but Massimo, informed and clearly very proud of Castello Bufalini, brought it to life for us yesterday as he toured us through. The signage in English, in each room, filled in the italian information which he gave us only part of which we could understand. The gardens are remarkable, designed 350 years ago, some original planting still survives. This is mid april so the old roses were just beginning to bloom. In May the massive old roses will intoxicate. Get lost in the boxwood maze for fun.

A great place to visit
Jun 2016 • Couples
We visited Castello Bufalini in the small town of San Giustino on Sunday morning and enjoyed a wonderful guided tour by a lovely italian lady who spoke excellent english. It was a very interesting, informative and relaxed tour which we thoroughly enjoyed. Visits are guided only, on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Opening times are 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:30 to 17:30 solare, 15:30 to 18:30 legale. Admission is free but a voluntary contribution is appreciated to support the ongoing work by volunteers. Well worth a visit and highly recommended.
