Visited there in July, walked through the magnificent fogging ancient forest and took the train to watch a scenic sunrise at the top of the mountain. Yes, it is indeed an awesome experience and must do!

Alishan and the surrounding mountains are just amazing nice. You would not expect this nature and beauty on a Pacific island. It looks a bit like the Alps (for sure smaller) but wonderful for hiking or wandering around.

Yes. Off peak easy. Only the early morning train to view the sunrise there's a bit of a crowd for the 2 timings which is around 4-5am.

slightly southern central. Its worth staying overnight but I note lots of day trippers from Chiayi which is on the HSR
