This is one of those breath taking stops that you must see. The vast chasm before you will have you camera working overtime. The rock formations and colors are phenomenal and worth pulling off the interstate. Besides there is also bathrooms facilities, tourist info and a gift shop -- so get out and stretch your legs. Watch for buffalo --... More

The Painted Canyon Overlook is your first real glimpse of the majesty of the North Dakota Badlands! The overlook has parking, a visitor center and a breathtaking scenic view. The staff in the visitor's center are friendly, professional and eager to help. Well worth the short detour off of I-94. Stop here for one of the most magnificent views of... More

The Painted Canyon is viewed from the rest area just west of Medora on Interstate 94. Most people don't expect such a site in North Dakota. The Painted Canyon really isn't a canyon at all. It is part of the North Dakota Badlands with colorful formations. While the canyon can be viewed from the rest area, there are also trails... More

This was a stop on our road trip that we just went to as it was on the way. We can say without a doubt the we would add this to our next trip as it is beautiful, so many different formations each with a different color and a road that winds through the Canyon to the overlook. Along the... More

We visited Theodore National Park on a rainy day. We were disappointed that we couldn't do much hiking. The rain let up as we were leaving so we decided to drive the 5 miles down I-94 to Painted Canyon. There is no entrance fee, which is nice. There was much evidence of previous bison visits. Well, we decided to hike... More

We did not know about the Painted Canyon Overlook. We stumbled upon it while on I-94. Luckily we were there early evening and took some wonderful sun setting pictures. It is worth the stop. Nice rest stop and place to stretch your legs.

This is like a rest stop on I-94 worth a stop if traveling in the area. Beautiful view of the North Dakota Badlands. There is no park entrance fee for this Visitors Center.

Stopped in here on the way to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Enjoyed watching the bison move thru the overlook as we entered and got some great photos from the overlook in the morning light!
