The trail is extremely rocky most of the entire way. If you go counterclockwise you will endure super steep ascents; the other way you’ll have to descend it. Rock slide a few years back just before the divide can be hard to follow, there are SOME cairns to help you ding the way. 7lakes basin a huge disappointment. Best area was around heart lake, that’s about it. You never know what the weather will do; my first camp was only about 3 hours in going counter clockwise. Freezing cold rain first night. Hiked over 17 miles the next day instead of making camp because it was so miserable.

This trip had to be booked in advance because of the park permits and unfortunately we had to experience the high divide in the rain, it rained the entire first 2 days. It was very unfortunate to not be able to see the mountains and scenery. I loved the experience but it could have been so much better without the rain. As far as the hiking goes it was an elevation of 3040 feet so the first and half of second day was all uphill.

Backpacking the High Divide loop we took four days was amazing and so beautiful. 22 miles and threes nights. We went to Deer Lake, Heart Lake, Seven Lakes Basin and Sol Duc campsite. Also ran into a few mountain goats on the ridge top.

I hiked this High divide loop in september and it was a sight to behold. Excellent Washington weather. Greenery all around and it was very calm and beautiful. Hike is not very difficult. Keep walking at a leisurely pace and make sure to be hydrated.

This hike could be the pinnacle of your summer hiking season as long as you are in great shape! My GPS says the High Divide Loop was a little over 19 miles. I did this as a day hike, but it's more popular as a hike in and camp kind of trail. The views along the High Divide are spectacular. You'll feel like you can reach out and touch Mt. Olympus!
