PS: Not sure why Fantastic Lava Beds is title of this attraction; It should be rightly be titled Cinder Cone. I do not think many people would travel to this remote area (the last 6 miles of which is unpaved) to see the "Fantastic" Lava...More

I thought this was pretty awesome. We bought torches for all our kids and we spent and hour wondering across and back. It is really interesting and out kids found the whole experience thrilling. It is a short walk from the car park, but there...More

The Butte Lake Area of Lassen is remote, but still interesting. It's about 6 miles off Highway 44. Unpaved, but more manageable than some of the other unpaved roads in the park. There is a campground and a day use area near the lake which...More

The beds are large chunks of lava that came out of the base of the Cinder Cone. The top of much of them are coated with cinders that changed color depending on the heat of the lava they landed on, giving the top surface a...More

Starting at Butte Lake, you walk by this amazing lava flow, apparently laid down in the 17th Century. After walking by the Fantastic Lava Beds, you come up to Cinder Cone, which is a 400 foot high, well, cinder cone. The hike up is pretty...More

We only passed these by on the way to hike cinder cone. A large pile of rubble. Not very interesting.
