We enjoyed visiting the Jaggar museum on the rim of Kilauea volcano. We could see the lava spouting up during the day and the night. It did help to have a spotting scope. We visited other locations in the park and enjoyed hiking. Its good...More

The hike changes according to where the flow is active.. currently it’s an all day hike- about 10-12 miles round trip and it’s not an easy hike- over a lava flows with cracks and crevices. Check the National Volcano park... More

I think on your own should be fine. We had a rental car and just did the free ranger guided tours.
