We decided to skip the sunrise and the scary bicycle tours and just go for a late morning hike into the crater via the sliding sands trail. Even with heavy cloud cover, we would get brief yet exciting glimpses of the crater surrounding us. I...More

Sunrise is spectacular (you need to make reservations well in advance). Take some warm clothes or at least a blanket. Morning temps with wind gets chilly. Night time star gazing also great. I suggest you go on a new moon and not a full moon,...More

We went for sunset. Arrived early so no issue finding a park. View was beautiful. It was windy and cold up there so make sure you take warm clothes and hat.

Super special day trip.. definitely do this..Amazing views, super clean and not crowded when we went.. Watch out for all the inexperienced people on bicycles 🚲 on the road but added to our fun lol

This was awesome. We went in the middle of the afternoon and got to see the crater still. The drive to the top was a bit steep and winding but the road was in great shape and paved. We had to drive through the clouds...More

First you must get advanced at the time of this post $1.50 tickets to go to the summit. Do this online at the national park service! Bring your reservation number with you! They checked it once to get into the park (guard gate) and again...More

A few years ago. The Boss and I were on a cruise to Hawaii and this was part of the package. I myself was very impressed and happy that I got to go there. As was the Boss I might add. To say it demonstrates...More

Once in a lifetime and it will be another check off your bucket list. Me, My wife and our 10-year-old daughter went to see the sunset because there was no way we were going to wake up at 2:00 AM in the morning to see...More

Hoping to get a quick answer! We fly out tonight at 6:00, wanted to stay around the pool and feed koi this morning. Thought we may head from westin ocean villas on kaanapali to Haleakala to hike? Planning to eat lunch and leave here around 11:30. Be there by 1:00, hike for 1.5 hours then down to Kahului by 3:30. We have a 7 and 10 year old that would like to see the volcano. Good or bad idea?

Bad idea due to altitude if you plan on heading into the crater at all. If you do go, be sure to pack lots of water to drink. You can explore the summit areas at 10k feet up looking all around. As the prior answer indicated... More

Hello! We are visiting Maui with our 5.5 year old and 2 year old boys in about a week. What is a good 1-day itinerary that includes a visit to Haleakala and maybe 1 or 2 other spots on the way back? I don't think we will do the sunrise tour as it will be too early for us to leave. Also, how long does it take from Kanaapali to get to the top? Thank you!

Aloha - coming from Ka'anapali, budget about 2 hours so your little ones can take breaks from the long car ride. There's a county park in Pukalani with grass areas for them to run around on. Look up Tavares Community Center... More
