Didn't not realize there were observation centers in Maui (due to the clear atmosphere and high elevation). The hike into the crater allows you to easily walk down (but with the reminder that walking up is extremely exhausting). Gorgeous scenery (even if not done at sunset).

We decided on the spur of the moment to drive up to Haleakala Crater - we didn't make the sunrise trip but it was still spectacular - 4* this time but maybe 5* if we get up early. The drive is amazing as the landscape changes from ranchland, through the clouds to trees and up through arid land and finally... More

What a view of the sunrise. I understand the attraction of the native Hawaiian people for this spot and the sunrise. I know you "see one sunrise you have seen them all". Certainly, no true in this case. A very cold introduction to the new day ( as they say wear layers). A steady wind and a dark horizon is... More

Wife and I were in Hawaii for first time and we decided to book Haleakala Subset tour with bikes as a way back. Everything was outstanding about this tour. Bill was an awesome tour guide even though some people though he was blunt and rude. I found him to be quite charming and didn't find him rude or anything like... More

If you are rested and enjoy hairpin roads for driving, this is a fun experience. Expect strong winds and cold temperatures and dress appropriately. (hotel blankets can be expected to blow away as we witnessed several times) Wonderful sunrise experience and photo op. The extreme winds the morning we went meant that most photos did not turn out and would... More

We arrived around 5:00 am and ventured out into the cold wind to find the restrooms and then headed back to the tour bus to wait for predawn colors to start. Sky was clear but it was SO COLD! We knew it'd be in the 30's but weren't expecting the gale force winds and what that wind chill does to... More

We drove to the Crater for the sunrise view - with (maybe) 100 others. The pre-sunrise temp was cold (dress warmly). Some were there is shorts! The pre-sunrise view was spectacular but ... weather is unpredictable and clouds rolled over us just as the sun was rising. That was a bit disappointing but, when you're with friends and the drive... We went during the day, not up for the early sunrise trek. We all liked it, kids included. Good information and amazing views. I liked the upcountry trip to get there too. We plan to go at night for star gazing sometime.

We were driving along in overcast, almost foggy weather and all of a sudden, we were above them all. Nothing but clear blue sky with the cloud deck at eye level. In another 10 minutes, we were above the cloud deck as if your were in an airplane but with the breeze and warmth of the sun in your face.... More

This is a must do in Maui. The ride up goes quickly from sea level to over 3000 meters high. It is a beautiful ride, passing by Kula which is a little and nice village, and progressively getting up towards less vegetation. The views from the top are amazing. On one side you will lots of craters and on the... More
