This tiny cabin was lived in briefly by the Behunin family (a dozen children). The river's frequent flooding forced the settlers upstream to what is now Fruita. Fascinating construction with the local red slate-like sandstone.

Just go read the sign. It will blow your mind. I'm not sure if the whole family lived here when there were 13 of them, but if so, they must've had to sleep standing up! This place is TINY.

If you're traveling to Capitol Reef from the east/north, you'll come across Behunin on your way to the park's official visitor center. Striking representation of how hardy and rugged and determined the people who settled this land were to call it their home.

If you stop by this interesting cabin (you cannot enter) there is an informational sign you can read which is interesting. You can look in the window here.

Blows your mind to see how large families lived in the pioneer times. Would be nicer if it were staffed, open and more of the history described.

It was very interesting to learn about this cabin. I cannot imagine raising 13 kids in the cabin with my husband. The views from the cabin are incredible. The signs were very informative. You can peek in the windows of the cabin but you cannot...More

Cool piece of history. Great pull out. Takes 5-10 minutes. Good up-close photos of the Capitol reefs. Amazing that settlers lived here. Just pull off the side of the road (RT 24) as you are driving through Capitol Reef. Can't miss it.
