This canyon has much to offer and I would suggest a review of those offerings before beginning any looking around. The visitors' center has a good handle on current conditions and difficulty levels presented by different activities. Advance preparation is suggested for some and this the place to learn that. Their advice will assure you of a pleasant visit. There... More

The South Rim Visitors' Center was well situated and included wonderfully helpful staff. We especially enjoyed the educational materials and full library. It was also fun to pan for the camera with the Ranger cutouts:) Finally, the Visitor's Canter included a full deck surround, enabling you to catch wonderful views of the Black Canyon.

We were visiting SW NPs' arrived at Gunnison NP about an hour before VC closing and the Park Rangers were very helpful. We managed to do a quick tour and returned the next day to do a more through tour. We sensibly avoided the longer/harder hikes, but all that we did manage were worth our time/efforts.

Very small visitor center but they offer information and a great film that explains how the canyon has evolved over time. Staff is helpful. Viewpoints of the canyon are nearby.

Small but worthwhile visitor center that offers a short film, a diorama of the canyon, maps, information, and a an orientation to the park. There is an amazing overlook just off the back of the Visitor Center. Amazed that there were no modern restroom facilities and we had to wait outdoors in a long line to use the pit toilets. Seriously?... More

This is an interesting national park that revolves the Gunnison river gorge. While it's not as deep as the Grand Canyon, the narrowness of it actually makes it feel more dramatic than the Grand Canyon. You really get the sense of the steep cliffs and the deepness. There are many good overlooks, most of which only require a short walk... More

An absolutely beautiful park!! There was a few inches of very powdery snow the morning of our visit which only enhanced the beauty of the park. We enjoyed a beautiful contrast of autumn color and winter weather. This was a real treat for drought stricken Southern Californians!! The views from all the viewpoints were stunning. Access to the viewpoints requires... More

The visitor's center is a great stop to get an overview of the canyon from the displays and the short film is very well made. Who knew that the Black Canyon owes its national park status to the tireless letter writing campaign of a Presbyterian minister? Great details about the early explorers of the canyon. Also lovely path and overlook... More
