Once one drives down the steep, winding East Portal Road to river level, one will be greeted by the Gunnison Diversion Dam where there is a picnic area with parking and pit toilets so one can stop and take a better look. The dam itself...More

The drive down to the river is steep. Make sure you use low gear on the way down. It gets you to the river by Crystal Dam. The view from the bottom in this section is not dramatic but if you have an hour or...More

Drove to the bottom on a motorcycle! Very steep and sharp turns. I think the grade was 16%. Definitely will test your skills! The beauty when you get down is so pretty and amazing. Different park from the rest. I liked it.

We were on a bus tour and visited Black Canyon of the Gunnison Natl Park. It was pretty, but hard to imagine the complete idea because you saw such a small area of the canyon.

Great "diversion " from the routine sights at the National Parks System....Shows what good fortune the folks in western Colorado and points south had when they went ahead & built the water tunnell !

It's quite a drive down from the top to the river. Make sure you have good tires and brakes. By the time we got to the bottom and parked by the picnic tables we had to put the hood of our car up and wait...More

Don't get too close to the west side road, but look carefully. The water flow is beautiful. Looking East, the Blue Mesa Reservoir goes forever

Take the time to read about the dam/tunnel and the water flow to the farmer's in Gunnison. What an amazing engineering project, and the fact that they drain the tunnel every winter for inspection and repair amazed me. Remember the road is closed in the...More
