Although Saddle Pass Trail is short, about 0.5 mile round trip, it is the most strenuous hike at Badlands National Park due to its steepness, rapidly changes in elevation, loose footings, slippery ground, and heat. It is especially unbearable in the summer months. Therefore, it still takes 1-2 hours to complete the trail depend on how fast or slow you... More

I did the hike up Saddle Pass, then came back down. The hike was more impressive than the view to me. Being up close to the Badlands formations was a unique aspect of the hike and the formations vary from Notch trail. The view at the top is nice, but it is no better than many of the outlooks on... A short hike up the Badlands Wall, winding up to connect with the Castle and Medicine Root Trails. Gorgeous views from the entire trail. Well worth it.

We had just enough time to do one hike (plus the Loop Road Drive), so after talking with some rangers and checking out the trail maps, we decided on Saddle Pass. We're so glad we did! It wasn't quite a straight up shot, but it was pretty steep (luckily there were a few nooks you could sit on to catch... More

We "hiked" Saddle Pass and then continued to where the Medicine Root and Castle trails intersect. The trip up is a lot of fun, basically climbing boulders to the top. The trip down is a bit more tricky as there is a lot of lose gravel and the steep grade caused us to easily lose footing. All in all, great... More

It's definitely work to get up to the top but it is definitely worth it! The views are by far the best in the area and you can see almost the entire area. Keep eyes on smaller children and follow the blue markers, you'll be glad you did! We didn't notice them until coming back down lol lesson learned

Very interesting but steep and somewhat slippery trail. Great views all along. Wear decent hiking shoes.

Great views! My husband & kids really enjoyed the hike and the views! Wear sturdy footwear, not a trail for flip flops!! I recommend wearing hiking footwear even if you don't plan to hike

O.K. we were not even planning on going on this, but our teens just started climbing, and before we knew it, our son was at the top looking down at us. He said it was so beautiful up there, however, he had to come back down as he was feeling nauseated. Soooo, when they say drink plenty of fluids and... More
