This is an excellent, well-researched, and impressibly put-together construction of plantation life through the eyes of the enslaved. This is the first plantation I've seen that did it correctly, it has several commemoration exhibits and offers a glimpse into the hardship and resistance of Black people during the most challenging times. My partner and I easily spent 3hrs there, reading everything, and conducting our own self-guided tour (with the help of the Whitney Plantation app, which is excellent). If you do not know anything about slavery, or even if you think you know the histories of slavery, this tour will expand your interest and add such invaluable knowledge.

I was very impressed with the amount of information offered and artwork on the grounds. The limited staff was so helpful and kind. I did the audio tour through my phone/earbuds so I went at my own pace and was able to stop and think of the people who had walked the steps I was walking and the tragedy of their circumstances through no fault of theirs. I found the various memorials moving and appreciated being able to sit and reflect on what I learned. Most moving to me were the statues/sculptures of the children throughout the grounds. I have such a problem comprehending enslaving people and treating them the way our country allowed. This history was sanitized when it was taught to me and only as an adult have I learned the true horror of American slavery. Any effort to educate our citizens on our country’s history, good and bad, will serve to heal and strengthen our nation. I recommend that any who are interested in the U.S. take the time to check out the Whitney Plantation museum. I learned quite a lot, not only about slavery.

Excellent! My husband and I experienced personal accounts of those who lived through the atrocity of slavery. We left with a heightened appreciation of the intelligence, ingenuity and rebellious spirit of the ancestors. Make sure you download the Whitney Plantation free app prior to arrival. It will provide you access to an excellent audio guided tour.
