The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Ikebukuro
Ikebukuro is an area of massive development. Several thousand tenants occupy two giant department stores and shopping malls, where all sorts of shopping and gourmet foods can be enjoyed. The 60-story building at the east entrance of the station, Sunshine City, is a landmark within Ikebukuro and features an aquarium, planetarium, theme park as well as an observation platform. The popular name for the western side of this area is "Otome Road" (Maiden Road) and there are many shops selling products related to anime with a female theme. It has rapidly become the worldwide headquarters for ‘otaku’ or geek culture.

A great place in the middle of the city. The park was beautiful for the autumn colors. Peaceful in the midst of bustling Tokyo

great garden, beautiful and quiet. A great destination for a walk or to find a calm spot for meditation! :) loved the place, not so big.

Mejiro Garden was a real treat and a stunning hidden gem for foliage. Color in other gardens we visited in Tokyo was not great this year, but the day we visited Mejiro Garden it was at absolute peak.
The garden is small and it takes a bit of work to find, but it is worth the effort. It is a short walk from Mejiro Station. There are signs posted along the street showing you where to go; the first is on the corner of Bakery Antendo. The walk is about 10 minutes through a primarily residential area with a few shops including “Ballerina” selling ballet costumes.
The garden is surrounded by a wall - be careful not to walk right past it. No other Westerners were there when we visited. Several Japanese tourists, a small group of local senior citizens, a wedding photo shoot, and a small group of Chinese twenty-somethings were the only people there.
The garden surrounds a large pond with a walking path going around 3 sides. The stroll garden has all the standard landscape features including an artificial hill, a small pagoda, a waterfall, a pavilion and wonderful plantings that in autumn were amazingly colorful.
There are numerous photos ops from various locations on the path and there were at least 3 other photographers there while we visited. At the far end there is a grassy area which had several food stalls around it - all closed for business when we visited. On the fourth side of the pond there are benches underneath a veranda; the seniors were sitting on the these benches admiring the view. Above the veranda is a building which looked as if it could rented for functions and it also included a children’s play school. The bride and groom rested in the building after having their photos taken in the pavilion above the pond.
There was no entry fee for the garden. The lovely ladies at the entrance asked us about our Japan trips, our visit to their garden, and then gave us a small gift.

Although there was light rain on the day i visited in late November , it was a beautiful small garden and a little off the beaten track so it was very quiet. The path around the lake was beautiful and offered great photo opportunites with some intense red colours of autum leaves . Entrance was free with an english guide map availalbe plus some postcards for sale of the illumnations at night.

My first time to visit this park. It was quite small. I came just in time that it opened at 5pm for the night illumination. Not a popular park but a hidden gem in Tokyo. Only local Japanese tourists, mostly couples on a Sunday night. So it is not as crowded as compared to Kyoto’s gardens. Great experience. Best part was it was just one station away from Ikebukuro.

I walked to Mejiro Garden from Ikebukuro and was glad this was my first stop. Even though nothing is blooming or growing in June, the nice pond with koi, ducks, etc. and the escape from the city is totally worth it. I did not pay an entry fee, nor was anyone at the gate, so I assume it is free entry. Got to see a photographer taking wedding pictures with a couple dressed in traditional.

Since this site got such high marks, I paid the ticket to go through the giant park. Note, the ticket is valid only until closing 5pm? it's not 24 hours.
If you want a quiet escape from Tokyo for a short while, it is a very small version of Central Park. It has a small lake in the middle but you can walk the whole site in under an hour.
Maybe when the flowers and trees are blooming in the Spring thru late Fall, it looks much better. But in mid-March, there are very few things growing (much less cherry blossom buds bearly spouting).
In the Winter, save your money and go through the free park at Yoyogi instead.
