I'd heard about this garden but never thought I'd get the chance to see it. It didn't disappoint. You could sit a stare at if for hours. It is just such a peaceful space to be in. The colours change constantly. The rest of the...More

The rock garden is serene. Get there early before the bustle of noisy tourists who might shatter its tranquillity. The garden around the temple is magnificent too. A must visit. Deserving of its UNESCO world heritage status.

Quite a beautiful rock garden but it was overcrowded with a lot of visitors so wasn’t overly tranquil. Lovely gardens surrounding the rock garden as well. Cost about 500 yen per entry for adults

There is a MINI-RYOANJI at the "lobby" area of the temple. This MINI-RYOANJI is my favorite of everything in Kyoto. Whoever thought this up, and actuallly put it there is a GENIUS. I have a micro-ryoanji on my desk at work except it uses "sand"...More

A nice place to relax at for a while. You can sit on the edge of the platform and enjoy the serenity of this beautiful creation. The rest of the garden is just as impressive, as is the wooden building.

Beautiful grounds! Very peaceful (if you can find a quiet place amongst all the tourists) and just soak in the serenity of this place. It can easily be combined with other nearby temples that are popular with tourists. If you're using a JR pass, it...More

In addition to the rock garden ( I liked it a lot), the inner gardens are very nice - beautiful lake, peace and serenity. I think it’s worth it despite the effort to get there.

There are literally only a few stones on some pebbles and a wooden structure in front. If you want to meditate for 500 Yen in front of some stones, you can.

3 bus stops from Kinkaku-ji Temple has an outstanding rock garden, as well as a lovely lake. Perfect place for relaxation.

leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil
residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's

majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene
artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the
bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji

Not all temples require a ticket. Only the more 'touristy' ones. The tickets can be purchased at the entrance and the fee is minimal, only a few US dollars
