A visit to a reindeer farm was a must for us during our trip around Finland. We considered various options, but eventually we chose Jaakkola Reindeer Farm located near Luosto. We opted for this farm because of different reasons. First of all, it is run by a Sámi family, whose culture we’re interested in. This is the third generation of the family who take care of the animals and do their best to show their culture to the tourists. The farm is situated in a forest, which is more preferable than when a reindeer ride is offered in a city. If you need a pick-up, they’ll arrange it for you, and will bring you back to the hotel after the tour is done. In addition, we wanted to have a traditional lunch in a Lappish-style kota hut. The sauteered reindeer with mashed potato was delicious. If you’re thinking about visiting a reindeer farm, this place is an excellent option.

I’d highly recommend this place. We booked the reindeer safari for a family of 2 adults and 2 kids 13 and 9 and we all loved it. We were greeted by a very friendly and welcoming Tomas if that how you spell it. We waited in the fire hut for other families to arrive and then went to the sledges for the reindeer ride. The ride was through a beautiful forest and with the sun rising and pink sky it looked magical. After the ride we went to the reindeer pen to feed the very lively reindeers and then back to the hut to warm up with the fire, hot drinks and a pastry. Tomas spoke to us about the reindeer and other things around the fire. Amazing experience that you won’t regret.

We at their cafe around 10 miles away the day before without realising, the food was very tasty.

It was freezing cold when we arrived at Jaakola but we were warmed by Anu's hospitality and her passion for reindeer herding! The reindeer sleigh ride through the snowy forest was great. It was quite amusing to see how stubborn and strong headed the reindeers are. On the way out, the leader stopped and refused to move continuously and our guide had to get off and pull him along as he walked. This was another story altogether on our way back. The reindeers barely stopped! We were told that they know that they're heading home and can't wait to get back. Haha. We stopped in a wilderness cottage to warm up after the first leg of our sleigh ride. Anu shared stories about her Sami heritage and how excited she was when she got her first reindeer who took her to school when she couldn't start her snowmobile. Really loved all the cute, heartwarming stories she told us about reindeer herding! She also taught us how to grill sausages in the fire on a tree branch after sharpening it with a knife!

We originally booked for the one-hour reindeer ride plus lunch and transfer on 28th of January 2020. However, due to an accident, we missed the bus going to Luosto from Rovaniemi, where we were staying. We right away checked with the owner whether it's possible to move the date of the activity to next day. The owner agreed; however, the timing changed because they could only accommodate us in the afternoon instead of lunchtime. The next day, we came to the place and rode the sleigh for an hour. After that, we warmed ourselves beside the fireplace with the provided tea and biscuits. We were also allowed to feed the reindeer, but only quickly as we were running out of time.

After the activity, we paid the remaining fee by card. We were expecting that at least the lunch fee will be deducted from the original pricing because we did not have lunch anymore in the new booking. However, checking on the fee charged to us, it included the full price (deposit not subtracted) and the lunch fee. We sent an email to the owner to ask for clarification and a refund in case the amount charged was a mistake, but we did not get any response. The rush on the activity is something that we could understand, but getting no response at all from the owner about a possible mistake is disappointing. We even tried to call several times, but they were not answering the phone.

I made a booking request with them in early January. They have no instant booking, so you need to wait for them to respond, but according to their calendar, there was availability when I made the request.

I heard nothing back for perhaps a week, so I sent two follow-up emails. Then I called and spoke to them directly. The lady I spoke to said they mostly serve big tour operators now, which is why there is limited availability. However, she assured me she would get back to me the next day.

I heard nothing back and finally just made a booking with another provider. About two weeks after I made the initial booking, they responded via email saying there was no availability.

Thankfully I made the other booking, but I heard it directly from Jaakola's own staff: if you are an independent traveler, they're not interested in your business.

Fantastic reindeers, so beautiful, so fragile, so Merry Christmas!
Fantastic experience.
Do not forget to wear (very) warm clothes.
As almost everywhere in Finland, it comes at a price, not necessarily justified by a high level of service. We were a group of ten…
Avoid including the meal, for you will have to eat afterwards because it is definitely too light for adults; and do not count on the host to give you an extra slice of bread. Plus you will have to listen to rather simplistic comments from a bit too « don’t do this don’t do that » host.

As a family with 5 and 8 year old children, we had a great experience on the 2.5 hour reindeer sleigh ride in the evening. We didn't see the northern lights, but the full moon transformed the land into a magical, glittering winter wonderland. A dream! There was a break in between with hot drinks and snacks to warm up and nice conversations.
Before the ride, we were able to meet and feed reindeer from the herd. A great experience!

We took the reindeer sleigh ride with lunch. The trip was great fun, spent some time feeding the reindeer, then took a trip into the forest, which was very scenic and had lunch half way. Very tasty reindeer soup and cakes. The guide was very informative.

We did a 3 hour tour and Thomas was our guide. But it was great, we covered a trail of 10 km and after 5 km we had a stop. We were allowed to feed the reindeer there, and there is also a log cabin. There we could warm up and drink hot cranberry juice, tea or coffee. Thomas had also provided a local snack and we could grill sausages on the fire. Thomas also answered all your questions and transferred his knowledge of reindeer to us. Definitely an excursion that I can recommend!!! Dress yourself well, because you sit still in the sled and you may get cold. But what could be better than visiting the beautiful Finnish Lapland with reindeer and sleigh. Certainly do!!!!!

Booked this on our Nordic Experience holiday, with Lapland Safaris Luosto, the office was next to our hotel.

Wearing our warm overalls we were taken by mini bus to the farm. The smooth, quiet sleigh ride was wonderful. Thomas our guide gave us so much information. We fed them afterwards and to see them up so close was amazing.

We then went into the big wooden hut with a log fire for hot berry juice and to meet the owner who showed us products and answered any questions we had. She gave us the history of the Sami tribe.

This excursion had been shown on TV, Gordon, Gino and Fred desperately searching for Santa.
