I have never been to the mine before, the guy who is in charge was very knowledgeable and helpful to everyone especially the children. Getting up to the mine is an adventure in its own right and to go and dig ourselves was good fun

Coming from Singapore, the experience of walking in the Pyha-Luosto National Park on Lampivaara Hill in -11deg C gave us a stunning view of the ancient forest and an experience of digging our own amethysts from a working mine. It was back breaking work! Worth visiting!

Amazing experience! My family, which includes a 9 and a 7-year old, absolutely loved it.
The walk from the parking to the cafe where you get tickets is easy enough, and the ladies is the cafe are charming. Note that this is not an underground mine!
Our guide spoke great English and we learned lots of new things.
The cherry on top was the time spent digging for amethyst crystals. We all found some. You can keep one specimen as long as it fits in your hand. In case you find more however, you can pay a fee to keep more.
The gift shop is lovely as well.
I highly recommend this!

Visite the place in a hot day in June. After walking 2.5km from Ukko Luosto parking area, we were at cafe area where tickets (22€) could be bought...and some fresh donuts and coffee/soda could be purchased. The tours are staring at every hour between 11am-5pm, so you need to be there on time. Our guide was a young gentleman Olle. He was very knowable on different amethysts and guided us through the creation process all the way to actual mining. The mine is in open air, so uf you expect to walk into a cool mine tunnel, you will ve disappointed. I personally liked the tour a lot and naturally found a small amethyst. If you are not lucky to find your own, you may buy some from the store.

An easy 30 - 45 min walk up a gentle 1.5 km slope from the base brings you to the mine during summer. You have the option of going up slope in a snow vehicle but only during winter. A guide explained the history of the amethyst.
You then get to go to the open mine and try to pick the stones as your free souvenir. There are millions of amethyst stones (and ordinary stones) around, some more valuable than others. But they have a strange policy of allowing you to keep ONLY ONE stone as your personal souvenir. The guide claims it is to conserve the mine.

Gentle walk uphill to the mines before you get a briefing about the only mine left in Europe. We went with a tour and didnt have to walk in the national park. It is already a snowy winter wonderland here unlike other parts of Rovaniemi.
The digging itself was fun and we felt like kids playing in the sand again. But I wish they would have given us more time to dig. There is a cafe where you can pick up some snacks and hot drinks.
We also had fun luring birds (jays) with our bread just outside the cafe. Our guide also brought us to a nearby shopping mall where we bought a proper amethyst stone ring.
Fun and great experience.

Lampivaara is located in the middle of Pyhä-Luosto national park. Driving your own car in the national park is forbidden, so you cannot therefore reach the mine by car, you must walk or ski there (or book transportation). The distance from the parking lot to the mine is approximately 2,5 km. The mine is situated at the top of Lampivaara hill and there are some stairs involved. Tickets to the mine and tours are booked from the cafe at the bottom of the hill, where restrooms are also located. We had water bottles and some snacks with us, but we were not able to resist freshly baked donuts in this cafe (the scent was incredible!). Just ask for the traditional rinkilämunkki in Finnish, when you feel tempted. The views from the top of Lampivaara are almost as spectacular as rinkilämunkki at the bottom of the hill. Guided tours that start every hour are informative and available also in fluent English.

As you can see from their website - You will travel to Lampivaara amethyst mine with special “snow train” Amethyst Pendolino which is a warmed wagon pulled by a snow machine. You may choose your departure station: the center of Luosto, Ukkoluosto parking lot (2,5 km from center, car parking) or Lampivaara Café (5 km from Luosto, you can arrive here by skiing, by snowhoes, by fatbike or by winter hiking).
We caught the Pendolino up from Luosto it takes 20-30 minutes to get the mine.

Hello, my name is Nadia and I'm from Italy. I have a lot of questions to ask and hope somebody can answer to all of them. We are 5: two adults and three kids. We would like to go to the Amethist mine by ourselves and not with a tour operator. I read that there is a Pendolino in a parking lot that will bring us to the Amethist Mine. 1) Where should I by the tickets and if I have to book them in advance? 2) What are the prices for each person or if there is a family ticket. My son is handicapped (deaf) and would like to know if there are special ticket for him or if the entrance is free because in Italy, in some places you get in for free and some others you have a little charge. 3) Where must we meat and what time to get the pendolino to the mine. 4) Because we are in Rovaniemi, what time do you suggest us to leave the city to come to the parking lot in time? 5) Does the Amethist mine have a straight e-mail to write to? I didn't find it. Thanks for all the answers that I will receive.

Hi, I would really like to visit the Amethyst Mine in Lapland late Feb but the 3 tour operators I tried booking with only accept bookings with a minimum of two people. Does anyone know of any other tour operator that will take bookings for solo travellers or the best way to get to the mine by public transport from Rovaniemi city ? Thanks.

How long is the walk between where the bus drops you off to the meeting point from where the Pendolino leaves?
If you come by the Morning bus from Rovaniemi, the first bus stop is at Lapland Hotel Luostotunturi. Pendolino to the Amethyst MIne leaves just across the road Luostontie.

Hi, we booked locally [we were staying in Luosto], amethyst mine have a little shop in Luosto which is open every day 10am till 5pm [approx], it was cheaper to book with them and also they have a snowcat which takes around 25 people all heated inside and leaves twice a day from Luosto centre just opposite the Luostotunturi Hotel [takes 1/2 hr], real easy way to get to the top and a really enjoyable and different ride. You can go with Lapland safaris or Snow games [Lapland safaris have just bought out snow games so all one company now] via snow mobile. Try if possible to go on a clear day really fantastic views from the top but the trips can book up quickly for the snow cat ride..............if travelling from Rovaniemi suggest you go with Lapland Safaris around 1.30hrs maximum drive to Luosto...............or drive yourself and phone ahead to book in the mine shop......all details are on there website...............enjoy.
