The final seventeen kilometres of the Coa valley contain hundreds of Palaeolithic engravings along the river’s banks, extending all the way to the River Douro. This zone has been made into Portugal’s first Archaeological Park. This Park was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 2 December 1998. This entire open-air art collection, which buries the old myth of rock art only existing in caves, is exhibited in the Museum through original pieces of movable art, replicas of “rock panels” and interactive zones that use modern digital technology. The art can also be viewed in loco on organised visits to the valley with specialised guides (advance booking required).

Visit also (no advance booking required) the Museum which provides an overview of the Ice Age Coa Valley rock-art, its archaeological context as well as magnificent views over the Coa and Douro rivers.

Museum opening times: High season: 09:00 AM - 06:00 PM; Closes at lunchtime (01:00 PM - 02-00 PM) in low season from the 20th of October until the last day of February. Closed on Mondays, 1st of January, 1st of May and 25th of December.

It is rare in my experience to be so close to our ancestors of 25000 years ago, and see expressions of their human intelligence. This museum and the nearby rock engravings complement each other, so I suggest seeing both. The museum is a striking minimalist building with subdued lighting that gives a cave-like atmosphere. The exhibits are well-presented and explained,... More

Interesting building, mediocre content, great setting, very good restaurant. Portugal has a knack for skirting only the surface of very valuable assets and the museu is yet another example. Great location, fantastic region.

That's why we advise our visitors to also visit, as possible and feasible, the rock art site down in the valley, in fact the 'true' Museum! More

This Museum explains all about the nearby rock paintings in the Unesco site of World Heritage in the Arequeolocical Park of the Coa Valley in Portugal near the Douro River and the Sapnish border. It is built in the Brutalist style and in harmony with the well-worth exploring surrounding area which is well off the beaten track and an adventure... More

A world class museum of the fantastic rock art from the surrounding valley. Not to be missed regardless of whether or not you do a site tour.

This museum plus a visit on one of the sites with the rock art is a full day activity if you are in the area and worth the time. We drove there on the N222 from Pinhao (Wow! Do this on a beautiful day for great scenery, but not at night -- over the mountains with lots of visits). Then... More

Rock drawings going back over 20,000 years! A dam was started when they found the ancient work. After twenty years of construction the dam was stopped and the site preserved. Well done tour (short drive from museum).

I absolutely agree with all the glowing reviews. (And I'm not a big fan of Brutalist architecture, but this one knocked me out!) However, when we were planning our trip to Portugal, especially to visit the Coa Valley rock art, I ran into trouble. Please note that my "review" is not a complaint about the museum, it's a heads-up to... More

A small museum with interesting exhibits and replicas of the stone carvings fron the nearby Vale de Coa archaeological park. We enjoyed the visit and it gave us information and helped us appreciate the guided visit to the carvings that we booked for the afternoon. There is a good restaurant on site as well - you can have a full... More
