A breathtaking trip in the top of Kazbigi mountains, this beautiful location is worthy the rough hike by 4WD, you'll feel so quite and calm specially in the cold weather (we visited in last October) the church is ancient and vintage.
You'll enjoy the scenery and you'll take a fantastic shots there. Bring your water (and snacks) if you plan to stay longer as there are no services there.
The road up is very bumpy but beautiful at the same time.

What a location! Pick a day with good weather and you will have spectacular views of the Caucasus and Mount Kazbeg from this amazing church perched on the edge of the mountain. Inside it's serene and beautiful. The monks still live in accommodation below the church.
The way up is only accessible by 4x4 since a landslide in autumn 2022 closed part of the road. Extremely rough and bumpy but the drivers are good.
Before or after, have lunch at the Rooms Hotel Kazbegi. We shared an enormous club sandwich with chips for 25 Lari, good value considering the price of the hotel rooms.

Its a destination that you would have on your list when you visit Gorgia. The trek up is around 3 hours but you can hire a 4x4 and save some time and energy. The road is really rough in places so it takes a bit of time but it is worth it. Gorgeous views from the church over the valley and up to the mountains. To enter the church you must cover your head and if not wearing a skirt there is one there to put on. Men should also put on a skirt if they are wearing shorts.

Beautiful hike, not hard at all. Walked all the way up from Stepantsminda to Gergeti, then up the hill, following the stairs trail to the church.
So glad we didn't take the jeep tour. Totally unnecessary. You could get up to the stairs by a car, then just follow the signs. No way to get lost.
Walked all the way up and back with a 6 y/o with no problem.
Take a rain coat, as you could be caught by a pouring rain.

Its worth the way up. If you want perfect pictures go early in the morning or after 18h. The oficial road is under construction, if its true. There is a detour and you can go up with your own 4x4 and good driving and offroadskills. SUV is not enough. Or you take a local taxi, bad tongues say, thats the reason for the detour and blocked main road.

The road is not closed, the taxi drivers closed it so your forced to take a rocky off road trip with them so they can score about 70 lari per trip. The road is actually finished and you can drive up using any normal car, bike or even walk :) the church is beautiful and the the view is insane, definitely worth a trip. Just a shame it’s ruled by the so called “taxi mafia”

If you are planning to drive yourself be warned that they have the paved road closed near the bottom and are detouring traffic onto a very rough track. Best if you have a 4x4 or at least high clearance. About half way up the rough track meets the paved road again. A large fleet of 4x4 taxis shuttles visitors up the rough road if you don't want to drive or walk.
The views from the church overlooking Stepantsminda are spectacular and are best in the afternoon. At this time you can also photograph the church with the mountains above Stepantsminda in the background.
Mt. Kazbek, however, is best lit in the morning. There are great views of Kazbek from the church but in the afternoon it's into the sun.
Nowhere did I see where Mt Kazbek lines up well behind the church. Either it's a very distant view, like from the Rooms Hotels Kazbegi, or if you go a bit below the church near the cross the the mountain peak is small and to the side. You can find shutter stock images of this.
Also note that no photos are allowed inside the chapel. It's still worth peeking inside at the icons and the beehive dome ceiling.
I would give the site a 5 if the road was open.
Date of visit July 5, 2022.

Easily THE reason to visit Stepantsminda - this view cannot be topped (pun intended).
The walk there isn't particularly hard - there's a goat trail offering some nice views directly from the village, though you can also take a cab straight to the top.
Entrance is free and there's gorgeous views from there - come on a clear day as otherwise it may not be the experience you're looking for.
From there you can either turn back, or hike up somewhat further towards the glacier (will take a long time) or just for some more awesome views of Mt. Kazbek.
