About
The Lost Valley offers a unique window into the cultural heritage of the west of Ireland. Indeed it is itself arguably the finest memorial of the Great Irish Famine that remains today. As The Lost Valley is an active working farm, visitors can experience life on the farm with pet lamb feeding for younger adventurers, a working sheep dog demonstration and a sheep shearing demonstration in season on request. Meeting point/Reception is located at the lost valley - Silver Strand, Louisburgh, Co. Mayo, Ireland.

A deeply moving and memorable tour.

My husband and I did this amazing tour in mid July. We adore Mayo...as I call it "the gift that keeps on giving"and our visit to the Lost Valley did not disappoint. On arrival we were greeted with that wonderful, warm Mayo welcome we so love. They say "The savage loves his native shore" and my goodness does Gerard Bourke love his land! His passion is so obvious as he recounts the story of those who came before him, their love of the land, the hardships they endured before and during the famine leading to eviction and in many cases , death. Gerard is an incredible storyteller with an amazing memory for facts and figures and quotes. Without a doubt this tour brings the past to life and is a wonderful way of remembering and honouring those who once inhabited that beautiful but harsh environment. His voice is so, so easy on the ear and to top it all off he has a great sense of humour which ensures that there are lots of fun moments on the tour too.
Many thanks to Gerard, Maureen and son Seán( who made sure we were first out of the valley to catch our boat to Clare Island)
I could not recommend this tour highly enough.

A gem of a tour in a gem of a place

A wonderful experience set amid the most beautiful and unspoiled scenery with a very knowledgeable and entertaining guide. Spotless facilities and great covid awareness. Ease of booking and punctual timing. So many historical things I learned of for the first time. One tour not to miss. Not difficult to do.

The Lost Valley - Spellbinding
Jul 2021 • Family
If you only do one tour when visiting South-west Mayo, make sure it’s The Lost Valley. Hosts Gerard and Maureen have created a magical journey back in time, walking through the most incredible scenery to visit the scene of Gerard’s parents and grandparents homestead. Gerard’s lilting, almost lyrical commentary is mesmerising, but his soft Mayo accent doesn’t diminish the impact of the history lesson delivered as you meander along the path into the valley. This tour teaches more about Irish history in 90 minutes than most people will ever learn, and really helps one understand how the Irish psych was influenced by the events of the famine times.
But it’s not all hardship and misery, there is mythology and nature in abundance, and seeing working dog “Jypp” herding the flock down off the hills was spellbinding. Will definitely return, many times I hope.

An Irish gem
Jul 2021
This was an amazing tour. Ger, our tour guide and local land owner of the most stunning part of Ireland gave us a truely authentic experience. We got to hear and see so much history of the Irish famine. As Ger himself stems directly from the area it compounded the experience further as you could see his passion for history and nature. We were extremely fortunate with the weather on the day but the tour itself ticked all the boxes. We were two adults and three teenagers and all thought the tour was a major highlight of our trip to Mayo. This is a little gem without question. The price is excellent value. I would go as far as to say it is under-priced for the experience. Will definitely be returning.

Unique experience
Jul 2021 • Family
Seven of us from 74 down to 6 thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the valley interspersed with the knowledgeable words of Ger Bourke, who describes the history of his family and the farmland in a way that brings it to life. The causes and consequences of the famine are explained concisely in a balanced way and the tragedies of the lives of those affected is almost tangible. The scenery looking out over the surrounding area is beautiful.
It was a hot day but the walk of about 5k is at a pace that was manageable by all and with water available along the way. Highly recommended for those who want a lovely and scenic walk and who want to get a sense of place and history of western coast of Ireland.

A 'Must Do' if you are in Mayo
Jul 2021
This was such a fantastic and enlightening experience, especially as we were having second thoughts before making the journey down from Westport. Gerard Bourke is a great story teller and has a great way with people. His guided tour really brings home the impact of the famine in the West, particularly Mayo and highlights the decisions taken and legislation passed that made the lives of these poor people so difficult. This is a must do activity - our drive from Westport was so worth it!!

A MUST if visiting Mayo
Jul 2021 • Friends
What an amazing tour. Went with my 75yr old mother and we haven’t stopped talking about how life would of been for the people who lived pre famine times and after. The hike around the land has a gentle incline in places but my mother managed it fine. Breathtaking scenery, killary fjord, lamb feeding, working dog demo and amazing stories. Gerard, Maureen & family (and the lovely dogs Sam, Toffee & Gipp) were welcoming and hospitable. A cup of tea & biscuits was very welcome at the end of the tour. What a fantastic place to call home. It’s a must if you are holidaying in Mayo. Thank you for such a wonderful day.
