Great visit

Impressed by the guided tour by the owner’s grandson and the owner himself, who came to present his Cabinet des Curiosités installed within the castle.

An enjoyable hour long tour

I visited this small castle and had an enjoyable hour.

I arrived about 10.45am and the tour was about 30-40minutes later. You have to take the tour to visit the castle. The tower is open 10.30 - 12.30pm then closes for lunch.

The tour is all in French and lasts about an hour, but that said there is still a lot to view even if you don't understand the commentary.

Behind the medieval walls, is a Renaissance château which is being restored. You can view the living quarters, chapel, kitchen as well as claim up a smaller tower inside for amazing views.

The tour cost 8 Euros for an adult. Parking is just outside the castle, be prepared to abandon your car somewhere!

We had a good time visiting the castle. The tour lasted about an hour and was very interesting, even for people like us who don't know much nor have a great interest in medieval history.

It wasn't expensive and time well spent! history is fascinating,

Nice castle. Worth the visit. Good view on the hill top. A bit over restaurated however and a pity you cannot access the main tower, as the steps inside are unsafe.

Amazing visit of the once ruined Tournoel castle. You have to take a guided tour round the castle - we all speak french so this wasn't a problem but I don't know if an English speaking guide or leaflet is available. The castle is really beautiful and has been renovated with passion and taste, since in was a ruin with no floors or roofs then obviously some parts are new but they have been well aged. The owner is passionnate about his project and this shows. The renovation is not yet complete so there will be even more to see in a few years. The children were both fascinated and there was lots to see.

Practical information; the castle is only open July and August. We paid 11 euros for the three of us (1 adult 1 paying child and 1 under 6). There is a small car park opposite the entrance (we didn't know and parked further down and walked -up...) the entrance fee goes towards the renovation of the castle. No gift shop or coffee shop on site ( a little tea shop near the ticket office would be nice especially if you are waiting for a tour) The tour lasts about an hour.

I am waiting to hear about more projects that the owner has apparently got planned which will be great. And why not have a medieval banquet one evening ?

The Château de Tournoël is an ancient, mediaeval fortress located on a rocky spur some 600 metres above sea level, overlooking the village of Volvic, in the Puy-de-Dôme département in the Auvergne. We visited on a freezing cold April day - so it was not open for visitors - but was well worth the drive up the hill as the Château is very impressive.

Volvic itself is also a nice place to visit - famous for its grey Volvic (lava) stone.
