Nov 2019
Visiting Lagoa, don't miss the Convento de São Jorge.
Usually you can see some shows down there.
And for the 100 characters "law" here it goes the usual bla, bla, bla

Well worth à stop when nearby. The convent is bear the church and water tower. It is free to enter. The convent was built in the 1700’s and fell into disrepair. A large costly renovation project has beautifully restored the building and it is now a cultural Center. Small rooms off the cloisters house exhibits- a shoe repair shop, a classroom, a clothes maker etc. The building is immaculately restored. You do lose a sense of history because everything is in such a good state of repair but at the same time it is nice to see the care that went into restoring the building. The director was very pleasant and showed me the menhirs located in the courtyard.

A superb and sensitive renovation of a 350 year old Convent

Be sure to see the Convent Chapel (used by the Anglican Church on Sunday mornings), the cloisters and even the original nuns chapel. Upstairs the original nuns rooms have been turned into small art galleries. There are many events held here, keep an eye on the local press.

Well worth a visit

Convent de Sao Jose in Lagoa is an interesting old convent which seemed to reach its apotheosis in the 1900s although there has been a religious building here for centuries. The small chapel is from the 18th century. There is an interesting small cloister and you can wander around the corridors and see the cells. There are some small exhibitions and a shop. Free entrance.

Old convent
Nov 2012 • Friends
The old convent has a lot of different uses. It has a lovely chapel, where music is sometimes played; megalithic stones in the grounds; an interesting art gallery where different exhibitions are displayed; an auditorium where there are often talks in the evenings.
