The world's first Unzoo project is located at Taranna, Tasmania, about one hour from Hobart and 10kms before Port Arthur. The Unzoo is an innovative and holistic wildlife experience dedicated to showing you the unique animals and plants of Tasmania while taking a lead role in preserving the critically endangered Tasmanian devil. Join our guided wildlife encounters and come face to face with our famous devils and endemic quolls, pademelons, rosellas, kangaroos, possums, frogmouths and birds of prey. More than two km of trails take you through the Tasmanian Native Botanic Garden from tall tree forest to the Norfolk Bay seaside. The principle of the Unzoo is to immerse you in our natural environment so, for instance, we have removed our boundary fences so the local wild animals can come and go as they please. Allow two hours for your visit or add an hour for a 4WD research and conservation adventure to see how we are managing the last safe wild Tasmanian devils on Earth. The Unzoo is open every day (except 25 Dec) from 9am. We schedule our wildlife encounters each half hour or so, that's 15 every day.

LOVE THIS ZOO - they're helping to save the Tasmanian Devil population as they have disease free devils that are thriving! They have several shows a day where they feed some devils and explain their feeding habits and other interesting things about this amazing marsupial. They also have a large area with lots of kangaroos, wallabies and pademelons that you... More

A great place to go to see Tasmanian Devil's and other Australian fauna. The Devil's were great. We got there in time to see them being fed. Talk about an animal with attitude.....A word of warning, don't put your hand over the side of there enclosure and if you drop anything in it will be wrecked by the Devil's as... More

We didn't have nearly enough time at the Unzoo. We watched the Tas Devils for only a few minutes, because we wanted to go to the kangaroos. Who knew kangaroos like getting their chest scratched? We were mobbed by 'roos and had a ball with them. (Just watch your step - roo poo is declarable at customs.) Check out the... More

This is a wonderful facility that is truly an "unzoo" - the animals aren't locked up - you are actually in an enclosure around them. We saw a lot of Tasmanian Devils, Kangaroos, Wallabies, etc. We saw the Devils being fed, and were actually able to feed the kangaroos and wallabies ourselves! So awesome! The wallabies are a little shy,... More

Great place to see Tasmanian animals up close. Make sure you see the feedings and get great information from the guides. My family said this was the best experience we had in Australia. Hand feeding Kangaroos was a bucket list adventure checked off!

As far as petting zoos are concerned, this is one of best experiences you will have. Witnessing the feeding of the Tasmanian devils with them fighting for their food was incredible. The feeding of the kangaroos was fun too... until a big bus load of tourists arrived. The place is too small to accommodate such large groups. I'm so glad... More

My husband Mike and I went to this amazing zoo that is not a zoo. That is the animals are not truly caged but in enclosures that allow them to wander around and be happy and safe. The amazing owners John and Caroline live the dream and run this truly magnificent establishment for visitors and locals who live in Tasmania.... More
