Arundels by the Pier closed down last year to universal dismay in west cork (and other places where less fortunate people live).
It reopened on 30th June with a brand new team put together by the brothers Maloney, Tom and Michael who are the new tenants. Tom hits the pans and Michael ensures a warm welcome front of house.
These are difficult times to be opening a new business but the place was humming on its opening night. The bar area has had a facelift and offers a bright cheerful welcome.
The brothers can’t lay claim to credit for the simply wonderful view with which God or someone equally talented has blessed this pier side hostlery.
The menu is short with a welcome emphasis on fresh and local produce. My carer loved the burger salad and chips. The dressing passed muster and the plump burger was declared to be “wonderful and enormous”. I noted that, despite its size, there was none left behind.
My fish was delightfully fresh and encased in a splendid light batter, set up by a tangy home made tartare sauce. It was accompanied by chips in a metal cup and home made mushy peas. I prefer my chips thicker cut but senior management strongly disagreed. So that’s final.
The pint of Murphys on admission was my first for three months - a most welcome reacquaintance. The Picpoul was a tasty accompaniment to the meal although the second bottle was clear evidence of over enjoyment and unrestrained joy at meeting friends after a long lockdown.
Give it a try. It’s bound to be a big hit. Booking by Facebook until the new phone gets sorted.

My husband and I stopped here for lunch while passing through beautiful Ahakista. The restaurant and setting are beautiful and that's why I have given two stars. After that, it was very disappointing. We both ordered the seafood chowder and it came after a half hour of waiting. It was honestly the worst seafood chowder I've ever eaten. It was a bowl of cream with a small amount of white fish and three mussels in it, and a tiny amount of parsley and dill. It really feels like they are cutting corners but it's not good enough for paying customers! In addition, we saw nothing in the way of covid restrictions. The waitresses were not wearing masks and the chef came out to meet someone in the restaurant while we were there, taking no social distancing precautions at all and wearing no mask. It's a pity as the location is excellent and it has great potential.

A beautiful setting, delicious looking food but unfortunately we didn’t get to eat here. Walk ins only, fine, but the ‘grab’ your own table when one becomes free advice was just bizarre. Even though they take your name and number when you arrive you are advised to ‘grab’ your own table as soon as one becomes free which on the evening we visited was gearing up to lead to a free for all, survival of the fittest type affair.. perhaps 10 tables occupied and about 10 groups waiting, each hungrily eyeing up the diners to gauge how soon they might vacate their table. Now I’m quick on my feet and well able to fight my corner but I didn’t feel like fighting for my dinner so left and went to nearby O Sullivan’s Bar and beautiful beer garden for very very delicious fish and chips. Maybe next time .

Yet again another excellent meal. The menu is small but everything is cooked to perfection using local produce. The wine list is interesting, with some unusual and great tasting wines.
Right by the water the view is spectacular, this is enhanced by the attentive service from Michael Annie and Kathleen{Annie I wish I could bottle that smile].
When you opened we hoped that you would give Ahakista its heart back, Arundels had been missed. Michael and Tom you have done it .Thank you!

Myself and my partner travelled to west cork for a couple of days to get out of Dublin. After staying in Ahakista for a night, we decided to have lunch out in the sunshine before we left and what a an amazing location Arundels by the pier is!! We were lucky enough to get a bench over looking the water. To start we shared a bowl of the chowder and then we both had the bacon cheeseburger with Chips. Believe me when I say, the cheese was not the only thing to melt in my mouth, the quality of the beef was first class. The chowder was full of fresh fish chunks and a perfect consistency. The staff advised me that all of their produce is sourced locally and I would well believe it. My other half said that the Guinness is the best pint he has ever tasted!!! The service was on point, all staff wearing masks and hand sanitiser provided inside the door. The bathrooms were spotless. Overall I cannot fault this place and will definitely be returning the next time I’m in West Cork.

Visited Arundels for the second time in the last two weeks. Two weeks ago with my elderly parents and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful and accommodating, as the weather was so bad we had to eat inside.
Went again yesterday evening and sat outside in the balmy 22 degrees.
The setting was absolutely outstanding.
The food was stunning. The service was excellent. They couldn’t be more friendly.
I had the Lamb Roti on my first trip and burger yesterday. My wife had the vegan curry and she is in love with it (She’s not Vegan) 🤔
The big plus in my head was the fact that they charge the same prices for the daytime food as the evening food. Most bars & restaurants seem to think because it’s night time, they can increase the prices for the same portions.

We have been here twice in the last 14 days and will return twice more on our annual visit to West Cork.
In spite of all the challenges of the last years, Tom, Michael and their partners and staff perform magic.
Whether upstairs with "full house" or downstairs in the pub area.
Food is great, prices are good and the service is what we expect!
Good to be able to visit Arundels again.

We ATTEMPTED to eat here 3 times during our 5 night stay in Ahakista. The first time there were no tables available and so we ordered takeaway, only to be told 10 minutes later that they didn’t have the correct containers to facilitate it.
Then we rang ahead and were greeted with a frosty “we are not serving food today”.
As dining options are limited here we attempted to order 2 x takeaway fish and chips this evening. Rang 3 times, no answer so drove down. Ordered takeaway and 10 minutes later was told that the chef was “not doing anymore takeaway orders today”, even though they were still serving at the tables and people were still ordering.
I’m all for supporting local but this was just an absolute joke. Not sure how one actually gets a table or a meal in this place. Is there some sort of ritual or secret code we should have used?

Stopped here with on a quiet Monday for lunch as was very impressed by the food and service here. Food was superb. Got the chowder and a chicken sandwich and these were fantastic. The chowder was crammed full of fresh fish and mussels and the sandwich was simple yet the attention to detail with the fresh ingredients was unmistakable. I have a 2 year old, so the playground attached was perfect to let him run around while I soaked in the View and the pint of creamy delicious Murphys. The prices were also very reasonable and the social distancing was well adhered to.

We just loved Arundels and could not wait to return, so we did the very next day! I had done some research and saw Arundels was highly recommended. It did not fail. The location is stunning even in poor weather. The decor is really charming and very pleasant and atmospheric. The first night for dinner my partner had the most incredible fish and chips - I was raging I had not ordered it! However, my vegan quesadilla was so tasty and very different. Dessert of chocolate tart with ice cream was delicious too. On top of that we really enjoyed very much chatting to the waitresses who were such a pleasure.
The next day we went back for lunch/dinner and luckily got in just before the mid afternoon close, This time we shared georgous mussels and Guinness bread to start with, and I had the fantastic fish and chips. Once again we engaged with the co-owner and it is always nice to get their story and understand where they are coming from.
We would very highly recommend Arundels by the Pier.
