A pleasant nature reserve with great views

The Schwarzes Moor is a nature reserve on the border between Bavaria and Thuringia. There are few houses or buildings and large stretches of empty, open moor. Of course since this is Germany, it's not really wild -- everything is criss-crossed by well marked trails for hiking and winter cross-country skiing. Still, it has a very pleasantly empty and spacious feel to it.

For casual visitors there are several shorter hikes of between 1 and 5 km, including a loop around a peat bog (the trail here is on wooden planking, so perfectly dry).

The high point is definitely a section of old "Grenze" that has been preserved. The Grenze was the old border fence between East and West Germany, complete with barbed wire, watch towers, and bunkers. You can find this about six or eight minutes walk straight back from the main entrance. Definitely worth a visit.

There is a bratwurst stand for snacks and a large, clean playground for kids.

The Moor is about 200 meters above the nearby towns, so it's always a degree or two cooler. In autumn and winter the weather can change suddenly, so bring a jacket.
