First, it's critical to know that Sian Ka'an is a huge reserve and there are essentially two ways to explore it. The first, and easiest to do on your own, is to enter from Muyil and see the edge of the jungle and take a boat trip through lakes and Mayan channels. The second is best done with a tour... More

We did a float trip adventure. The tour company takes you out to lazy river created by the mayans for trading. The boat drops you off and you float for about 45 minutes in a beautiful lazy river marsh. The time of day we went no one else was there and it was so peaceful. If you wear life jackets... More

Although the reserve is large, we only saw a very small portion. We met Pastor a Mayan (pastorcaamalATgmail) at the entrance of Muyil (15 minute drive from Tulum center). I was under the impression that it would be a private tour for our group of 4 but he tagged on 2 more people. It was fine with me. He took... More

Did the sian ka'an tour with TUI. Extremely overpriced. In total 3 hours in a very small jeep with 5 people on a bumpy road. That's only fun if you are the one driving. The boat trip is pretty cool tough. Fast boats and we had a very good captain. Spotted a lot of animals; a group of +-8 dolphins,... More

We stayed in Sian Ka'an and loved the isolation and tranquility of staying on the reserve. But for those who are staying in Tulum, there are plenty of reasons to make the trip into the Reserve. There are a number of excursions that can be arranged, to go fishing, take a boat tour to see birds, snorkel off the beach,... More

I contacted Pastor as mentioned in other reviews. The price seems to vary, we paid $800 pesos per person (some people paid 600). We were a party of 3 adults, we shared the boat with 3 other people. The access road is a bit bumpy but not as much as some people seem to have experienced, it takes about 10... More

Instead of a full day excursion to the Reserve we opted to hire a local guide to float down the canal. We had a 4 yr old & a full day tour was too long & costly. We arranged by internet & met the guide at the lake site. He took us by boat to the dock & we floated... More

I did a tour with a local Mayan independent guide, Pastor. You can contact him at pastorcaamal@gmail.com. He was very knowledgeable about the fauna and flora and skilled at spotting wild life. We were able to find manatees, crocodiles, stingrays, osprey eagle nest and a wide range of different birds, which he knows all by name in English and Spanish.... More
