Beautiful Interiors

Once inside this 600+ year old treasure (after a LONG hike up the steep streets to it's location), you'll find a real gem of a church. The carvings are absolutely stupendous - the pulpit is the highlight, but you can't not be impressed by the simplicity of the altar area - above which is a huge multi paned window.

Peaceful settings

This is an unknown 600 years old church. It is along a winding road away from the new and old highway. The church is really beautiful as is the surroundings. Also, this place is not along the main tourist route and you way find no one else at this place.

Beautiful and calm

On my way to Broby, the local bus from Helsinki wound through villages and side roads, including through Pernaja. I saw the church from the bus window and when I got to my friends' place, I asked if we could take a trip there as it seemed so beautiful.

There was no one there to show us around, but I understand the church is about 600 years old. There's some sort of detached steeple construction that belongs to the church also.

What really is different is the number of Swedish names in the graveyard and that's what I noticed from the bus first of all. Pernaja is a Swedish language majority village and those graves are well tended and beautiful. There are a couple of oddities - statues and vaults that are so different from what you'd find in an English country churchyard.

This is well worth a detour if you're taking a leisurely trip along southern Finland towards the east from Helsinki. It's an area I prize highly, although it's rather off the tourist beaten track.
