About
Jose Maria da Fonseca is one of Portugal's largest and most prestigious wine companies, begun in 1834 and run with undiminished passion since that date by the same family. The winery is in the charming village of Vila Nogueira de Azeitao, where visitors are welcome to tour the museum and cellars where many of Fonseca's wines are aged, including Periquita, Portugal oldest red wine. Another must-see is the Setubal Moscatel cellar, in which wines as old as the company itself slumber in their hallowed and tranquil vault. These Moscatels belong to the private collection of the Soares Franco family, of whom the sixth generation now heads the company. The tour ends with a wine tasting. At the Wine Shop you may buy that special wine or gourmet regional product for a friend.Tours occurs everyday from 10.00am to 12.00, and from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.

Very nice visit, short and to the point tour with a guide that could answer all our questions + delicious wine and snacks in a shaded Garden area after the tour!

A lovely experience on a rainy day in November.
Carolina our guide was the best we ever had at this place and at any of the few wine cellars we visited around the world.

Fantastic wine tour

We were treated to an exceptionally well researched and presented tour by Carolina on Saturday. Her depth of knowledge about the family, the wines and Portugal as a whole was admirable and her warmth and hospitality made us feel at home. Highly recommended!

Interesting wine tour.

Visited an a very cold, foggy day so not ideal. The guide was very informative and talked us through the history of the vineyard. This was followed by a walk through the gardens and then a tour of the cellars. It was very cold and walking is a bit tricky if you have a walking disability (steep steps to garden and cellars darkly lit). The shop has really good value tasty wines on sale and you are given 2 complimentary wines to taste if on a tour. Small when compared to many vineyards in France but interesting nonetheless and located in a pretty village between Lisbon and Setubal.

It got worse and more expensive recently.

The quality greatly varies with the guide you get and some are terrible and only one is very good. The prices went up recently while the quality decreased greatly and the wines they give you to taste are pretty bad.

Near Lisboa and Setúbal (center of Vila Nogueira de Azeitão).
Cheap.
The explanations about the house and property (José Maria da Fonseca) are excellent.
The cellar and the huge barrels of wine (french oak) are fantastic.
At the end the (small) wine tasting is nice.

Old time-y winery
Sep 2019 • Friends
Lovely property. The wine company started in the early 1800s and probably feels the same, like a step back in time. Cobwebs and all are all over the wine barrels. We did the tour in English, learned some about the place, then sampled two wines. It was part of a package assembled for us from Lisbon. The winery is in a super cute town - wish we had more time to check that out.

Ok, but they shouldn't charge you for the tour
Jun 2019 • Couples
Our guide spoke English well, but she didn't seem very interested. Of course you can ask questions but she answered all of them pretty short. You get a short tour of the museum and a little bit of information, really, only a little bit in our case. When we started the tasting she was gone quickly.

I feel they should not be charging any money for the tour, because it's not that interesting, in our case less then 30 min. And they make a lot of money on the wines afterwards. So there is absolutely no reason to charge an entrance fee.

It is 5 euro / person in 2019 if you'd like to know.
