Beautiful...

It’s a beautiful lagoon, with a nice trail to do. It’s great do to with a family, friends or a romantic walk. It’s a easy walk with just a slight inclination so it’s prefect!

Secluded, tough to get to, raw nature
Oct 2019
The lake is signposted from the main road, but the single lane towards the lake is gravel and eroded, so not good to drive down unless you have a good car. We parked on the road opposite the turning and that was fine.

There's a main path down to the lake however we took the secluded path that breaks off to the right. It's not signposted but as you're walking towards the lake, there's an opening to a field with an abandoned building in it; if you walk to the right of that you'll see a footpath down. This takes you past Lagoa dos Nenufares, an overgrown feed lake for lagoa do Congro. You end up at the opposite side of the lake to the main viewpoint and it'll feel even more secluded.

You can easily walk round to the main section where there's a built viewpoint and some other areas where you can get different perspectives of the lake. The walk back up is easy and doesn't take too long. You're not allowed to swim in the lake (there's one sign at the top). Wear good shoes as it's muddy and uneven.

Beautiful Scenery!

It was a nice little hike down, not too hard (as a 19 year-old with hiking shoes at least) and in my opinion worth the views. Already the hike has a lot of beauty to offer and the lagoon looks beautiful as well! :)

Worth the hike!
Apr 2019 • Couples
This little lake is the most amazing colour. It is a bit of a hike to get down to the lake, but it is well worth it - it is almost magical! Don't miss a visit to Lagoa do Congro, but wear good walking shoes as it can be wet on the trail.

Beautiful peaceful scenery
Jan 2019 • Couples
This lake is approximately a 15 minute hike down from where you can leave your car. We were the only people there and it was a lovely experience to sit by the waters and hear nothing but birdsong. Parking/access may be trickier if there were greater numbers of people visiting in the summer months.

Hike to a beautiful place
Nov 2018 • Couples
This lake isn’t easy to reach. You’ll have to hike half an hour to get there. If it has rained, it can be quite a slippery way down. In the end you will be treated to a very beautiful and peaceful scenery. We loved it!

Relaxed peaceful place
Oct 2018 • Solo
This is a small lake, a peaceful quiet place. Follow the signs towards Furnas if you come from the southern highway. Then there are signs towards Lagoa do Congro. Last part is a narrow dirt road so I stopped first opportunity where some other cars stood (by a tree and a gate to the left). I then followed the road to the right walking for a few minutes. There is another sign Lagoa do Congro where a path descends to the lake. There is no parking space there but a few cars were parked by the dirt road (little wider here). A few minutes down you will see the lake. The path is wet at parts from passing streams but I was okay wearing sneakers.

I was the only one down there for a while in the afternoon. I saw some large fish and a large black and white bird.

Nature at its best
Oct 2018 • Couples
This is the most beautiful volcanic lake on the island. A very must. Even though the trip is on a dirt road, it’s just for a short while. The walk to the location is a beautiful nature walk with great photo opportunities.

Magic
Aug 2018
We only saw one other couple when down at the small lake, so it felt like we were in another world. The lake is a bit of the beaten path, but signeage is fairly clear (we had to turn around because we missed it). There's not much room for parking or for turning around. One just parks along side the dirt road. The walk is fairly easy (about 15 minutes) and gets a bit steeper at the end. At the end is a small beach offering a look over the lake.
Well, right before you go down to the beach there's a path to your right. Out of curiosity we took this path as we we were going back to our car (so turning left). The first 50 feet were easy, but then you had to go through some high weeds eventually reaching a path on the other side. We followed this path for about 1/3 of a mile and eventually turned back. I guess this path leads around the lake, but the fact that it was overgrown at the beginning leads me to believe that walking it is discouraged. You do need hiking shoes to walk as far as we did.
It really is an amazing place. So tranquil and so well hidden by mother nature. You'd have to be there to enjoy. Hope you'll find yourself there alone.
