Midgard Historical Centre is the centre for Vestfold’s Viking history. It is located with good view of the majestic Borre mounds, and here you can experience exhibitions, lectures, family activity days, festivals and much more.

You can also visit The Viking Hall, located about 200 metres from the Midgard Centre. The Viking Hall is a mighty mead hall constructed to give an impression of the great halls that once stood tall in the landscape of Borre.

This isn't the largest museum you can visit in Norway but if you find yourself in the area, I'd recommend visiting both it and the neighbouring burial mounds which are themselves one of the most historic sites in Norway. The staff at the museum are very friendly, knowledgeable and informative. The exhibits themselves are high quality and multi-format, which for... More

We had a great time at Midgard Historic Centre. We came via public transport (Oslo to Skoppum train and then skoppum to Borre bus). There was the Viking Market when we visited and it definitely added to the day. The exhibition at the centre was great and very informative and the mounds were magnificent. Viking market was brilliant. Great to... More

Hello Joanna H, Thank you for your visit and your positive review, we're very happy you liked it here! Of course, the Viking Market is an ideal time for a visit. It is a bi-annual event hosted by local Viking group Borre Vikinglag, and it is one of the largest Viking markets in Northern Europe. The years in between we... More

This is just a small museum but there are many seasonal activities here. After visiting, one can walk to Borrehaugene or Gildehallen, or the old Borre church. I am on their e-mail list so that I know what they have to offer especially when they have lectures given by "Viking" or medieval times experts. The best of the activities is... More

Hello atbnorway, Thank you for a great review! We are happy to hear you stay updated on our activities via our email list, and that you appreciate our activities. This year is the spectacular Nordic Viking Market, organized by Borre Vikinglag, which is bi-annual. The years in between we have our own festival, Midgard Viking Festival. We will also be... More

The museum (Midgard Historical Centre in Borre) is actually in four parts. First you may want to see the exhibition, with many interesting findings from viking graves. Then you may want to go outside and try the viking playground. It offers a wide range of “Viking activites” such as throwing axes on wooden poles, shooting with a bow and arrow... More

Hi Tore, Thank you for your review. Yes, there is a lot to see here in the area, and in addition we also arrange various acitivity days, lectures and festivals which we warmly recommend. You are correct in your obsevation that the Viking Hall "Gildehallen" resembles a stave church. The theory is that these great aristocratic mead halls were the... More
