Ruins of a nice old castle, that you can enter, climb and explore
Sep 2019
We originally came to see the Ballinskelligs Beach, but were pleasantly surprised to find there were also ruins of an old castle here -- something the kids especially enjoy. We walked from the beach to the castle and went inside to explore. It's not very big but nice to walk around, climb the old stone stairs, and walk around the edges and see the view from the top.

Great castle, easy to explore!
Nov 2019
You can tell by the many photos that this place is easy to get to and easy to explore. The climb up is easy but can be a bit slippery when wet, so just take your time. You are rewarded with great views and the chance to let your mind wonder on what this would have been like centuries ago. We visited on a November afternoon and had the whole place to ourselves, we his from passing showers inside the walls and watched the tide come right up to the doorstep. This place affords you the chance to feel like a kid again and let your imagination run wild. This was a unique place, as enjoyable as any of the great castles we have toured before.

Enjoyable Castle!

This was one of my favorite ruins because it is publicly accessible, and is one of the few castles in Kerry that I was able to find where you are easily able to walk around! If you visit with small children be careful because there aren't any railings.

Castle tower left on the beach looking lonely
Aug 2019
Time and shore movements have created this oddly positioned tower on the beach. Worth a photo - not a visit.

McCarthy Castle

We stopped at the beach to see this 16th century tower house. It’s incredibly picturesque, and worth the time to walk up the beach for pictures, but you’ll need to wade through water if you actually want to reach it. The ruins of Ballinskelligs Abbey are visible from the beach well.

Nice ruins
Aug 2019 • Family
If you're on ballinskelligs Beach it is worth the short walk over to have a look. The water on the far side of the ruins is gorgeous.

The ruins themselves can be climbed and there are lovely views from the top.

Everything kids need.
Apr 2019 • Family
This surely is a sight of minor importance, however, it has everything a family with children (9-14) needs: A beach, a small river, rock pools with all kinds of little creatures, a ruin to climb on (and take pictures for Insta, mind the teenagers), even a history connected to pirates!

And a chocolate factory nearby to retreat to when you're getting cold.

Picturesque and fun to explore
Apr 2019 • Couples
After admiring the view of this lovely ruin from Ballinskelligs beach, I nearly didn't bother walking out to it because I had to get my feet wet crossing a little stream to get there. It was totally worth it! The castle has a double wall with a staircase inside it which you can go up onto the top of the ruin. It was so fun to explore and totally unexpected. I was the only person there!
