Must See

While driving through the area, we stopped at a bakery in this small town. The lady in the bakery recommended that we stop in the church and we are very grateful for her suggestion. The inside is very ornate and beautiful. They had a large and extensive nativity on display as we were there just after New Year’s Day. We wish the gift shop had been open.

An Church art lovers hidden gem in the Bavarian countryside
Sep 2018 • Friends
As we were touring the Bavarian country side our drive guide made a stop at Rottenbuch to see Stiftkirche. From the outside the building has a clean modernistic yet traditional appearance. Most notable is how well the church, cemetery and the surrounding area appear to be maintained. To say they all are "Clean and neat as a pin" would be an understatement. When entering the church the initial reaction is a jaw dropping WOW! I have seen many Churches throughout the European continent and never ever expected to see such beautiful interior in a country church; but beautiful it is beyond belief. So, I offer some photos to pick up from where I leave off. If you are ever touring the area and appreciate beautiful churches ... go to this church, you will not be disappointed.
To the parishioners of Stiftkirch Rottenbuch, you are to be commended for maintaining this church and grounds in such a wonderful condition.

beautiful church

If you are interested in architecture, this is a hidden gem. Rottenbuch used to have a larger convent, and this was its church.

Just WOW!

Amazing Baroque church in the very small town of Rottenbuch. I am baffled by how exceedingly well-maintained they keep it, despite what must be a small congregation! Free entry, easy to find, and we practically had the church to ourselves. Gift shop staff was friendly and helpful. Highly recommend a stop here!

Never judge a church by its facade
Dec 2016
along the Bavarian Romantic Road was Rottenbuch Abbey, founded as an Augustinian monastery in 1073, the Abbey church was constructed between 1085 and 1125 in the Romanesque style. The elegant and simple exterior didn’t prepare us for the extraordinary high baroque style interior which was created in the 18th century and is a glorious example of fine stucco work. It may have seen several centuries come and go, and its library was pulped at a paper mill in 1803 following secularisation, and today continues its work as the – rather fancy – parish church. As we visited on a Sunday, the bells pealed and locals trickled in for their morning service as we left them in peaceful prayer.

Beautiful - it blew us away
Dec 2016 • Family
From the outside this church is very unassuming and plain but step inside and there is the most ornate baroque church I have ever seen. We were lucky to be on a small guided tour with Pure Bavaria and our driver Gunnar gave us a wonderful insight to the history of the town and the importance of this church. Would highly recommend a visit

Only attraction
The beautiful church is the only attraction in this little town. I think it shold not have made it to the Romantic Route. I mean, it is a wonderful barroque church, if you are into churches DO stop here, if not, cross this stop from your trip.
