Amazon view and scenic

When there on our way back to San José, amazing views and the hike was enjoyable, it’s a route that a lot of bikers visit, so you will not feel alone.

Worth a visit
Jan 2020
As others have said, this is worth a visit if you are in the area: a curious place, the museum itself is open only on Sundays, although the outside area for the hike along the old railway lines to the old bridge can probably be done any time.

Nice stop over

Authentic abandoned railway station with amazing bridge. Make sure you have a baby carrier (or be prepared to have you baby on your hands) as the way to the bridge is not suitable for young children nor is the bridge itself. The bridge is a hazard in fact. But definitely worth visiting if you have the thing in you for railways!

Easy hike
Jan 2018 • Friends
This is an easy hike down the old rail road tracks from the Atenas railroad museum. It is a historic bridge that crosses the Rio Grande River and runs along the Hwy 27. Great place to take spectacular photos from but great care must be taken because of many missing railway ties on the bridge. Not recommended for young children or if scared of heights.

Impressive old rail bridge

Now that the railroad is abandoned, we walked from the museum, down the rails and out to this bridge. Scary high over a gorge. No railing.

Fun little stop!

We had a bit of time while in the area so we thought we would check out the Museo Ferroviario Río Grande de Atenas (if searching for this on Waze, use that title, NOT Puente Ferrocarril Rio Grande) and we were glad we did. The owner did not speak English but we figured it all out as he showed us around the museum with my rudimentary Spanish. It was clear that he was an enthusiast and loved the collection of railway paraphernalia, trinkets and photographs. He showed us into the train engine and pointed us down the tracks to the puente. An hour well spent. Sure, it's no Smithsonian, but there's a little something for everyone. Regarding directions, if Waze is directing you to pay the toll and get on the highway, turn around and take the 3rd right at the roundabout, then left and follow the road around to the right to the end.

A Little Uneventful and a Little Hard to Find
Feb 2017 • Couples
We found our way to the museum (take the roundabout and go over the highway, don't get on it). We don't speak any Spanish so it felt a little sketchy at first, but it's ok. Very weird stuff in the museum. We walked out to the bridge but it looked pretty dangerous and we decided not to cross it, so just watch out if you go, think hard before you start across - it looks shaky and since I don't love heights I decided best not to try. Still, it was worth the trip to see it - the whole trip took less than an hour.

Unknown little gem for railroad buffs
Nov 2016 • Family
I went there with my family on a Sunday. The museum curator opened up the old diesel electric engine for us and gave us a personal tour. He then showed us a mountain of old railroad memorabiia in the little museum.

Don't expect Smithsonian here. That being said, if you want to meet a curator who takes extreme pride in a little museum, you'll find it here. Everthing from old photos to equipment, railroad tools and novelties from bygone eras. It is worth the time.

The old Puente Ferrocarril (railroad bridge) over Rio Grande Atenas is just a short 5 minute walk from the museum. If you don't like heights, you may not want to walk this one, but the view is spectacular.

Great Hike, Great View
May 2015 • Friends
Most enjoyable way of getting there is hiking through the mountains and following the railroad tracks. I took a bus until Atenas park and from there GPS to a back route that would take me to the railroad tracks and followed those until the bridge and to another city where I took the bus back to San Jose. It was a beautiful hike and the bridge is just amazing! Great view, great experience, and really cool to hear the commentaries from the people driving by the main road. haha
