My husband I had a guide, rather a fisherman filling in, Felipe was very knowledgeable about EVERYTHING on the water and in the town since he's of several generations in Las Peñitas. We had dinner the night before at Barca de Oro and they booked us for the next morning. We showed at 8:00 and they tried very hard to... More

Defenitely worth going there at sunset to release the new born turtles into the sea. It was just fantastic.

We were looking for tours to do in the nature, when we finally found a stay in the reserve for the same price! If you speak spanish (or even a little, the guy is good and speaks cleary and slowy in spanish), go see the white house at the end of Las Penitas to book your stay. We were looking... More

All the bungalows were sold out when we went, so we camped on the beach. Aside from a swarm of mosquitoes at sunset, it was a perfect escape -- a beautiful sunset, good meals, great stars, and we were fortunate enough to stumble upon a turtle digging a nest and laying eggs during our turtle walk at night. High praise... More

Four of us went on a boat tour of the mangrove / Juan Venado Island Nature Reserve. It was a fun afternoon seeing lots of different birds, crocodiles, lizards, etc. Our guide Antonio was wonderful...it was incredible how he and his son were able to spot birds/animals that we would not have even known were there!

My daughter and I kayaked into the reserve, with a local guide (who only spoke Spanish, but we managed). You quickly feel like you have gone into the wild. Lots of birds to see. We went to the sea turtle hatchery which was very interesting.

The people of Nicaragua are doing everything in their power to save the sea turtles. Unlike the majority of Americans, Nicaraguans understand and appreciate the complex relationship between nature and people

At the Barca de Ora hotel where we booked the trip, there was some confusion. 3 couples had each booked a private tour at $15pp but we were all to go on the same tour. One couple objected & the charge was reduced to $13pp. It didn't matter as there was loads of room for us all on the boat.... More

We enjoyed paddling kayaks through the estuary. Red, white and black mangroves make the perfect habitat for egrets, about four species of heron that we were able to identify --I'm sure there are more-- magnificent frigatebirds, kingfishers, whimbrels, sandpipers and osprey. With the help of a guide, we were also able to spot a baby crocodile --! Such a lovely... More

There are so many different kinds of wildlife, especially birds, it's almost mind boggling. My guide said almost every time he goes on the tour he sees something new.For my part I saw two baby crocodiles, two gray iguanas, tons of snowy egrets, racoons, snow white porcupine like blowfish, kingfishers, with their bushy crowns, bright red little crabs, big black vultures,...
