I went to Hohenwerfen mostly because it's where the movie "Where eagles dare" was filmed in 1968 - I wanted to see the place in real life. Found what I was looking for but also stunning views and castle with a long and interesting history...More
We had a great family trip he and enjoyed hours exploring all the different areas, enjoyed the guided tour, especially going to the top of the bell tower. The restaurant was surprisingly good - nice food and cosy.
I can say that I was pretty impressed with this castle - old and everything was really well preserved - the clock, the wood inside the tower and the bell! My favourite part from the tour was when we went on the top of the...More
I absolutely loved everything about this place ! From the super modern fernicular railway up the mountain side to the view from the lavatory window everything is breathtaking. The birds of prey show was excellent, the variety of birds and the intimacy of the location....More
I won't lie, my interest in this stemmed solely from "Where Eagles Dare." It's definitely much easier to reach by car or bus. We'd gotten the train to Werfen from Salzburg though so it took us a while to find out how to get to...More
We visit many different castles on our Bavaria/Tirol, Austria trip and this one was clearly a highlight and standout. To see it across the valley from the Eisriesenwelt was impressive and the views from the castle itself over the valley was quite pictureresque (even on...More

I arrived there with my family at around 1 o'clock and we stayed till 5 o'clock in the afternoon. That gave us plenty of time to explore the castle on our own (kids get an amazing little book with questions and riddles and keeps them very engaged in exploring the castle), have lunch at the restaurant, take the tour of the castle, enjoy the falcons and eagles (absolutely amazing!) and take the path down the hill on foot while enjoying an ice cream (bought as a bribe before starting the walk). :)
