This quarry is where the Nazis shot 27 hostages in reprisal during WW2. The read leading to it (beside the main road to Pouancé) is named after them. It is set out in groups with soil from France built into each one. Limited parking (free) is available and you may have to cross the busy main road but they have... More

At the entrance to the quarry they have now erected a series of explanatory panels in addition to the already useful speaker (in French, English & German) explaining its history. It never ceases to move one when they visit this memorial site. The 27 hostages, indiscriminantly killed by the Nazis in an act of terrible retribution are commemorated in groups around the old quarry. They have painted a broader central white line on the main road to calm the traffic making parking access mush better..

They have now made the roadside parking much safer and prevented overtaking along this stretch. A short walk down to the old, disused quarry which is now a memorial cemetery.

Please see my comments included in my Chateau de Cateaubriand review. It's both peaceful and harrowing at the same time. Be careful if you opt for the information speakers if there are other visitors present. It can be very booming and upset the peace and tranquility!
