About
The Caves at Vallorbe (Canton de Vaud) in the Swiss Jura were opened to the public a quarter of a century ago. They afford a spectacular display of the beauty of natural rock, enhanced entirely by natural illumination. For millions of years the limestone layers were eroded by the Orbe, a river which runs underground before bursting from the rocks – seemingly as a natural spring of which the Vallorbe Caves are the faithful guardians. Inside these caves, which are among the most beautiful in Europe, there is a display – the “Fairies’ Treasure” in which more than 250 mineral samples from all over the World are exhibited in four domed rooms hewn from the natural rock.

The underground river: see a resurgence from inside-out in a magic cave
Aug 2021
These beautiful cave are quite special, also in a geological way: Situated about 250 m higher and a couple of km to the southwest, the lake formed by Lac de Joux /Lac de Brenets has no out-flowing river. In some mysterious way, the water disappears, seeping into the carstic ground and form a mighty subterranean river that formed the caves. Therefore, the natural cave entrance is a so-called resurgence.
Through a well maintained and easy walk you can follow the river inside the mountain, meeting interesting rooms wth stalactites and stalagmites and other concretions along the way.. As said the path is easy and wide, so no fear of claustrophobia, but it might be wet, therefore high heels or slippers are not recommended. And the temperature is about 13°C all year round, so make sure you take some warm clothes. And there are many stairs, so go slowly and enjoy the scenery. The lightning is very well done, with some section illuminated only if you press a button, but then giving a sequence of illuminated spots that guide your eyes to the most interesting formations. Fortunately no horrible multicolored lights like the ones you might find in other caves. Well done.
Just before exiting, visit the newest addition, an impressive collection of rocks and crystals divided by continent, with many rare and beautiful pieces.

Fabulous caves
Sep 2020
Wonderful caves, so much to see, the walkway is good and well maintained so anyone can visit safely, although the ground can be wet. The underground river thunders under your feet and the stalactites are high above your heads, and the stalacmites all around you. Interesting formations are lit up along the way

Great place with great walk
Aug 2020 • Couples
A bit far from the train station but the walk there is gorgeous. Just be careful to not wonder too far in the forest as there are wild animals and the path turns natural. May be very slippery.

Cave is amazing with a awesome sounds system with a story somewhere at the end.

Great place to visit

A must-visit place when in the neighborhood. Best to go when there are not too many people (hard to fine these times). Amazing, interesting, educational. Even the environment is breathtaking.

This is an amazing place to visit and worth spending some time. Plenty of language translations available. Take your time to walk along the Orbe and discover the caves. Great route through spectacular formations with a highlight at the end. Enjoy the views, nature and the ambiance. This is a unique place and you definitely must see it.

Restaurant des Sources near Grottes de Vallorbe
Jul 2019
The grottes de Vallorbe (underground caves) are stunningly beautiful and among the best in Europe. After our visit we had lunch at the Restaurant des Sources only a couple of hundred metres away. Delicious varied menu, and not at all expensive. We enjoyed eating outdoors on the terrace.

Amazing Cave System
Jun 2019 • Solo
I'll start with the caveats. This place is not wheelchair or pushchair friendly - there are LOTS of steps'

That said, it's the best managed grotto attraction I've seen. Access is sound with paved walkways, and concrete or steel stairways in most places. Information is easily available for the tour round, either with a printed pamphlet which you can borrow, or with the app for your mobile phone, which basically reads the text of the pamphlet for each numbered location on the tour.

The caverns are quite spectacular, with interesting formations including stalagmites and stalactites. The underground river is visible in a few places, and there are a number of pools/lakes as well. The final cavern on the tour, the Cathedral, is pretty impressive.

I don't profess to be fit these days, but I managed to get round in about an hour and a half, although I was delayed a little by a large guided tour group just ahead of me.

Really stunning cave
Aug 2018
This is a must see if you are nearby, I was surprised by the size of it and the variety of how different the cave can be. If you are visiting in the summer a jacket is necessary as it's chilly down there. You can also admire a nice collection of different minerals.

Very good place to visit
Feb 2018 • Family
A great place to visit. Amazing views inside the cavern. Not very good for older people who might not be able to go up the stairs to the cathedral. Still, something that people should come to see. Also the surroundings of the cavern are great!
