This is an out of the way place to visit. It is up on the mountain about 20 minutes from Brienz. It over looks the valley and sometimes you are above the fog and up in the sunshine. It is a small ski town. There is a shuttle that takes you up but the last one is at 4:30PM. It... More

Loved this moderate hike to the Hinterburgsee. Discovering the wooden carvings by local artists, along the path was a highlight of the hike. Great experience. Bring food with you, options are limited for purchasing food in the area.

Scary drive up very narrow roads which are not meant for 2 small european cars at the same time. The view along the alpine lake along the way is spectacular, but in my opinion, the drive up is not worth it. The hike to the top is not on a path-it's trhough a farmer's cow pasture and it's rough walking... More

It is a 1,5 hour walk slightly uphill, from Axalp to the mountain lake. The children will love it because there are about 100 woodcarvings along the path. A lot are cute animals, but also children, people. The lake is beautiful, and you can take another mountain trail back to Axalp. This takes about 1 hour and starts with a... More

The annual Fliegerschiessen Axalp is run by the Swiss Air Force in October at their Axalp-Ebenfluh gunnery range in the mountains above Meiringen. There is short airshow associated with the live gunnery featuring most of the types operated the Swiss Air Force. However, this show is intended for the local populace to say thank you for enduring the disturbance from... More

To get to Axalp, take the bus from Brienz. The trip up the sinuous (and narrow) road (requiring frequent soundings of the melodious horn) is a delightful experience. Inexperienced drivers should not try this in their own cars. You will be expected to back up if you and the bus can't pass by each other. The Hinterburg Seeli is a... More

We spent 4 days at Axalp. 2 times we walked the trail that take us to the Hinterburgseeli. It is not a difficult walk, about 1.5 hours each way, upper way go by Restaurant Hilten, it is a little bit more difficult/harder way. All the way to this hidden lake you will find magnifficient wood carvings which teachers and apprentices... More

We'd spent the morning at Giessbach Waterfalls and decided for lunch we'd take the car up to Axalp - a ski resort during the Winter months. The drive up there alone is terrific! You climb all the way, & at each turn have the opportunity to enjoy panoramic views of Lake Brienz and the surrounding mountains. We got to the... More

Once at Axalp, look for the trail that takes you to the Hinterburgseeli. It is not a difficult walk, about 1.5 hours each way. As yo get near this hidden lake you will find magnficcent wood carvings where teachers and apprentices from the National Wood Carving School in Brienz have come along to convert the stumps of trees knocked down... This area had beautiful healthy Swiss air and the views of Lake Brienz as your coming down the mountain is breathtaking. It is possible to get cheap accomadation in the area even in summer in one of the ski-hostels.
