A lot of trail options here allowing for hikes of short duration up through over-night routes. Trails can be strenuous and occasionally treacherous, so watch your step, have proper footwear and allow sufficient time. Maps are available at the main trailhead where you can get...More

Heard from the guide that some people died when crossing the stream when the water was too high. I think when hiking in this area, you need to double check the situation with the park ranger and don’t take risks. Take a guide if the...More

Walking through Shiritani is an amazing experience. I joined a guided tour with Yes Yakushima, lead by Steve who provided so much interesting information about the ecosystem during the walk: this really enriched the experience.

Day trip to yakushima island. Took toppy jetfoil departing at 7.00-9.45 and leaving at 17.00-19.05. It was quite expensive but we need to be efficient since we only stayed 2 nights in kagoshima. Went to shiratani unsuikyo with taxi. It costs us roughly 2800 yen....More

A beautiful place with clear trails marked with pink ribbons. The shortest trail around the sugi trees is very easy and stable because it’s mostly wooden platforms. However the other trails should be taken with care as it can get slippery even when it’s foggy....More

We spent a very wet (typical) day hiking the trails at Shiratani. They were all very well maintained and not too difficult (for the average "in shape" and "flexible" young adult), but we were glad to have proper footwear and rain jackets. Note: those with...More

Yes, it would be safe to hike Shiratani by yourselves. The Park office provides a pamphlet map which you can follow, however you need to pay attention to the track markers. This is one of the more popular hikes, so there... More
