We spent a very wet (typical) day hiking the trails at Shiratani. They were all very well maintained and not too difficult (for the average "in shape" and "flexible" young adult), but we were glad to have proper footwear and rain jackets. Note: those with...More

It was quite easy to get to this place. I took a bus from Miyanoura at 8:28am and arrived at Shiratani at close to 9. You have to pay the entrance fee which is 500 yens. The scenery was magical with the green color of...More

I recommend getting here early and taking your time doing the long hike. It's a pretty good hike and lives up to the hype. Make sure you read the signs properly, we didn't and accidentally took a 2 hour detour turning our 5 hour hike...More

Just completed this trek. We were blessed by cool and dry weather and this was our first time hiking on the island. We were guided by excellent guides but if an experienced hiker fluent in Japanese should manage. Good places to take photos and we...More

Great Hike and experience. Please note that the hike can be challenging at times and would be handy to bring along hiking poles. It's an experience to see 600 different species of moss.

This is the first place we visited on the day we arrived in Yakushima. It was already after 4pm, so the staff at the ticket office recommended we should take the 80-minute course. It was a very good start for our biginner's tracking. It I...More

High up in the mountains with spectacular waterfalls and trees. The road is narrow and single lane near the gorge so best to take it slow if driving and keep an eye out for wandering monkeys. Also bring wet weather gear as Yakushima is the...More

Can go by bus from the port Miyanoura, the bus trip is full of amazing view. The forest is stunning and the weather is nice in November, cool and sunny time. The waterfall is very beautiful, water is extremely clean and suitable for drinking (we...More

Trekking guide Jenny from Yakushima Life would have to be the best guide on Yakushima. There is no fuss, nothing is too much trouble and she goes the extra "mile" to assist you, whilst on the island.

Did a day trip here. Did the long hike that took in some wonderful forest views with amazing old trees, expansive moss carpets and burbling streams. The climax was a climb up to a rock with the most incredible views of the valley. The trail...More

Yes, it would be safe to hike Shiratani by yourselves. The Park office provides a pamphlet map which you can follow, however you need to pay attention to the track markers. This is one of the more popular hikes, so there... More

The most time efficient hydrofoil is the one that leaves at 7:45, as Marloes mentioned. After a brief stop in Ibusuki, it arrives at Miyanoura at 9:45am. You must be at the ferry terminal 30 minutes before departure. You... More
