It is only about an hour drive from Otaru. It worths to go. It is not just because of the rugged rocks in the ocean but also scenic drive on the way. The walkway from car park took about 15-20 mins only, easy no difficulties....More

The view at the top is worth the climb (which takes quite a bit of work, just give yourself time to stop and enjoy the scenery instead of rushing).

Rented a car and drove from Sapporo to Shakotan - Cape Kamui. Beautiful drive along the seaside, absolutely stunning views. Cape Kamui, and some of the other capes were breathtaking, and a must see. Would have loved to continue driving down the coast even more...More

bus runs a few times a day from Otaru and once a day from Sapporo; disappointingly, gate to walk to lighthouse was closed today (8 July)--that means that the sight can be visited easily in around 30 minutes

I went in mid July, its raining some days, on the day I went to Kamui, had a little rain in the morning but clear sky in the afternoon.
