We stayed in Otaru two nights, and on the second day we drove to Shakotan Peninsula. There are a few must places on this Peninsula (Kamui Misaki and Shimamu beach). We were there during the sea urchin season and had a sea urchin feast. On the way back, we made a quick stop at Nikka Whisky Factory, which is a... More

One of the highlights of our trip, Shakotan was breathtaking. Remember to check the weather forecast the day before as the blue waters of Shakotan look their best on a sunny day!

We loved driving along the Shakotan Peninsula. We rented a 1000cc car from Toyota that cost us around SGD 70 per day. The speed limit of 40-50 km. Therefore it was a leisure drive for us. The blue sea and mountain view really recharged both of us. The sea was so clear that you could see the sea bed! Plus... More

If all you want to see is the Capes Kamui and Shakotan, and you get an early start, and have your own car, you can be back in Sapporo in time for lunch. The road from Sapporo is scenic and pleasant driving; speed limits are ridiculously low (never more than 50km/h!) and its one lane each way from Otaru onwards... More

come to escape the crowds and find the fresh air you were looking for in Hokkaido. It is not accessible by public transportation, so either rental car or hitchhiking would be your best options on how to get there. It is a very open and thus windy area, so tie your long hair and bring a sweatshirt. You can walk... More

We booked the Chuo Bus Shakotan tour that departed from Sapporo main station. Included in this tour were a visit and whiskey tasting at a famous distillery, a long hike down to a rocky beach (and back), a nother long hike to the Cape Kamui (and back). The final stop was to board a boat tour which we had to... More

The waters here are so blue and crystal clear! Shakotan is a perfect day trip for anyone as it is close to otaru. However, i highly recommend coming here by car. You can try the bus but it is not very frequent so you will have to be mindful of time if you want to catch the bus back in... More

We took a day tour with a local bus company. Bus was really clean and comfortable. Sights were really beautiful. Really breathtaking. Opportunity to hike to the western tip of japan too... Glass-bottomed boat tour allowed us to see the seaweeds and sea urchins... Feeding the seagulls was really an experience on it's own!!!
