This is one of the oldest house that is available in Shirakawa-go. From the start of the tour, our guide has already asked us to drop by at this house. The house is so cool. It is a Japanese Traditional House. Inside the house, they offer us barley tea. The cost to this house is 300 yen, and you can... More

Kanda House was a warm refuge after trodding in ankle-deep snow around Shirakawa-mura. The fire that met us upon entering the house was so welcoming. This was one of only a few houses open to visitors. We went through different parts of the house and got an insight into their culture and how these Gassho -style houses were constructed.

It's was interesting and we were shown the different areas of the house and finished with a cup of tea. The garden and surrounding area was very beautiful. Very clear waters with lovely fish swimming in it

The Kanda House was designated as a national important cultural property. It was built over a period of 10 years by shrine carpenter. This house adopted new improved techniques as well as maintaining original structure of Gassho-style. The wisdom in its designs included quake resistance, fire protection, measures against snow and ice, etc. The Kanda House was used to raise... More

Worth a visit to have a peek of lives in yesteryear. However, there are a few stairs to climb and may not be suitable for those who are not too mobile...

The house is in the Ogimachi Gassho style village of Shirakawago. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The "owners" of the house explain the uses of the rooms in the house. One gets a good idea of the simple life of the farmers of the village and the maintenance of the thatch cottages. The stairs inside the house have... More
