Long open slopes of a gentle gradient for beginner skiers/snowboarders. There were nary any other foreigners there other than me and my friends. The lift operators were helpful and patient (our first time taking the lifts, some falling involved), and the wide and relatively empty...More
Lots of variety from beginner to expert and everything inbetween, everything from board parks to long runs (if you connect them together). Lots of places to eat and drink on the mountain and good prices.
A great experience.

Iwappara is not that big and it appears to be geared more for locals rather than foreign tourists. Gear rental was ok, and the staff was extremely patient and helpful as our Japanese language skills were not too good. Snow scoots are also available in...More

Conveniently located 1.5hrs out of Tokyo, Iwappara has many ski slopes offering a great variety of gradients for various skill levels. Ski lifts to various start points is very efficient. Snow was powder, and came down regularly, even in mid-March. Good times!

To be honest it is not english friendly. You can rent for ski and snowboard from the Salomon station at the middle or the bottom station (though the middle area slopes are more mild if you are a beginner). Not sure about the costs but it should be similar to other resorts in Yuzawa.
Though late for your last trip, perhaps for your future trips. Sierra Resort is at Iwappara, or otherwise Naspa new otani if you just do skiing. Early Dec more likely that the higher resorts like Gala are open.
