I went to Sounkyo as a day trip from Asahikawa on 1 August. Took the 8:35 limited express train to Kamikawa (rail pass) and then switched to bus to reach Sounkyo (870 yen). There are also direct buses from Asahikawa to Sounkyo (same bus but...More

Reward with a majestic view at the midway section of rope way. Did Not take ski lift as we are not dress for the colder temperature expected at the mountain. When the cloud moves it gives us a surreal feeling be above the clouds. Surprise...More

We experienced a beautiful clear Autumn morning. There had been enough snow to provide beautiful scenery and both the gondola and chairlift were operating. It was midweek and sufficiently off-season that the crowds were limited. We also found the visitor centre very helpful.

Save yours strength and take the cable car/chairlift ropeway combo. Then it's not an easy hike (my iphone says 113 floors I climbed over 10000 steps, so it's not un-steep), some steps still covered in snow July 15 (although mum, aged 61, could achieve in...More

I just wish we were there in the right season. But nevertheless, the views are breathtaking. We got there by public transport without much difficulty with adequate research beforehand. Hike of about 2.5hours maximum to the peak. Hiking down probably will take longer because of...More

Absolutely stunning in winter with the gorge covered entirely in white powder snow. There is also an ice waterfall festival to enjoy in winter. A soak in the onsen while staring at snow is heaven!

I flew to sapporo and then drove there - there was still a fair bit of snow on the hiking tracks during July, so I'd expect it to be quite frozen in May. You may be able to hike it if you had full snow hiking gear.
