After three train rides and a taxi to the park entrance we find out the Monkeys decided to go into the jungle and mate. I am sure it is not uncommon but was quite a bummer. We hung around the next morning but no show once again. Since this was a stop as part of a fixed itinerary we had... More

We took the bus from Nagano and then walked the ~40 minutes up the hill to the park. The walk itself is very nice through the forest. The monkeys are everywhere once you get to the park - they roam freely around you. It's very fun to watch them swim, bathe, groom and sleep right beside you. There were many... More

We stayed 2 nights in Shibu-onsen accompanied by a. Japanese national colleague of my husband's. The weather was turning rainy for the next day, so we rushed from Nagano station in our rental car straight to the park after a brief checking at our ryokan. We were able to spend 2 hours watching the delightful monkeys. If we did not... More

We travelled from Narita Tokyo by RV and the scenery up to this area was stunning. The views kept us slowing down and taking photos all the way. It was fun to drive up the road to the parking bays and see the hot spring water spewing steam out the front of the houses - during winter this would be... More

The walk is a little long for us older folk, but an easy & beautiful passing the Jigokudai steam vent (look for it on the right hand side on the journey up) amazing to see steam coming out of the ice & snow, once there it's fascinating to watch the antics of the Macaque's, relaxing & diving into the hot... Try and get their early. The tourists rather mob the monkeys like paparazzi. So if you can get there first thing (when the park opens) you can enjoy the monkeys to yourself for a few moments.

The park's size is pretty overviewable, but beautiful nontheless! There's many monkeys to be seen everywhere, you won't be able to miss them. Try to arrive as early as possible though, to avoid the tourist flood past 10am. Couldn't see any of them bathing though, as we went during summer. Some can get agitated when you stand too close (hissing,... More

I can say it's 1 of my favorite place in Japan, first time to experience snow, most memorable because i never thought that it's very slippery, got a little accident but luckily no broken bones, now i know that i have to be very careful in this kind of weather, must wear snow boots it's a must.

I had a brilliant time here taking so many photos of the monkeys. It's amazing to see them roaming around so close to you. I went in the spring which meant cute babies. It's a nice walk to get to the park and you don't need too long there. I spent a few hours as I love photography but many... More
